Fast Twitch: Workouts for sprinters

At the request of Doug Adamavich, I'm about to start a new feature on the Arizona Masters Web site's blog called Fast Twitch. It's not much different from what Ande Rasmussen is doing on this Web site. I won't be weighing myself and I will probably not go into much detail on weightlifting, though. I will post workouts each day (twice a day on the two days a week I do doubles) and add some comments and other stuff. Since the blog on Arizona's site has no place for comments, you are welcome to post your thoughts about my workouts on this thread. My first post is on the blog now. Take a look and I'll see you on the flip side. Jeff
  • Yes, Paul, I'm doing a 100 fly in front of more than 50 people. It'll be my first 100 fly and 100 free shaved ... in my life. Come back and laugh when you do a 100 *** at nationals. Jeff.....you make me proud! See the good thing for you about fly (vs. back) is the only time the crowd will see that duck footed/locked ankle position you have is standing on the blocks!! :thhbbb: See you in two weeks my friend!

I have two questions to answer: 1) Kevin, if you were planning to go all-out on all the 75 IMs, then you should have not drilled the last round. In sets like these, you will get tired and you will feel like you can't get your arms over the water. That's the point. You are pushing your body to the breaking point and pushing it further. You're trying to tell your body to continue to swim fast -- and swim correctly -- despite the large amounts of lactate in your body. I'm doing a set tomorrow (Thursday) that will illustrate this. Got it. While I wasn't going all out, I was certainly going 90%. But your response does help me a lot. I wussed when I should have pushed. In truth, I didn't know what I was supposed to do on that set. See my problem is the work out is written just like I typed it above and the coach on deck is not a swimmer. He just hands out the printed work outs and "baby sits." So I am left to decipher the set on my own and with my training background prior to masters being pretty darn weak, I am usually guessing what level of effort to swim in each set. This is something I am hoping to change and ultimately get more out of each work out. Kevin
  • Jeff- just to check, are all your workouts for this blog in yards? They are yards unless otherwise specified. The pool will probably be turned into long course in mid-April, when the college and age group kids come back from break, though it will not be long course all the time. Because I am also training for a long course meet in June, swimming long course is just fine. Plus, it will help my short-course endurance.
  • Round 1: back kick with zoomers; Round 2: free kick with zoomers) Jeff.....I have a question based on the set above...how does one kick backstroke with zoomers when they have no ankle flexibility....I have visions of two fins sticking vertically out of the pool (and hitting the bottom in the shallow in on free/fly)???!!!
  • Small correction, my last name is Adamavich ;-) Somebody always wants to add an "o" where there isn't one... BTW, aspiring swimmers should take Jeff's advice. I swam at the Sun Devil Invitational as well as saw Jeff swim. When he was racing I could see a cloud of steam from his lane. He was burning it up, so his training has yielded positive results so far. While he was not quite as fast as Jeff, the legendary Ron Johnson set two new records at that meet too. Now if we could just get Ron to use a computer maybe he could post some of his workouts. Thanks for posting Jeff! Doug Adamavich Chairman Arizona Masters Swimming
  • I apologize for the misspelled name, Doug. It's fixed now. I know what it's like to have your name misspelled. As for Paul, I can only sigh in exasperation ... and laugh at the thought of my Zoomers sticking out of the water.
  • There will be about 13 days from the last day of nationals to the meet in Tucson. I'll probably take a day off, then do a little bit of hard work to keep myself in shape, then rest five days. But that plan may change. The last time I did something like this, it worked.

Jeff, I note that you will tapering only a week for SCNats. Will you then try to extend the taper to your June USA meet?
