Fast Twitch: Workouts for sprinters

At the request of Doug Adamavich, I'm about to start a new feature on the Arizona Masters Web site's blog called Fast Twitch. It's not much different from what Ande Rasmussen is doing on this Web site. I won't be weighing myself and I will probably not go into much detail on weightlifting, though. I will post workouts each day (twice a day on the two days a week I do doubles) and add some comments and other stuff. Since the blog on Arizona's site has no place for comments, you are welcome to post your thoughts about my workouts on this thread. My first post is on the blog now. Take a look and I'll see you on the flip side. Jeff
  • Great idea, Jeff. We are of course, disappointed that you won't be weighing yourself... You know Peter....he did seem to be looking a little "chunky" the last time we saw him.......or maybe it was beacuse he was wearing a jammer.... PS: Jeff.....masters Rule #2 "no doing two a day workouts allowed"

  • "also swam a meet in Tempe yesterday, so I'm a little sore. I was shocked that I swam a best unshaved 100 IM (52..76)" w00t!!
  • cool I look forward to reading your writings hook 'em ande At the request of Doug Adamovich, I'm about to start a new feature on the Arizona Masters Web site's blog called Fast Twitch. Jeff- just to check, are all your workouts for this blog in yards?
  • You know Peter....he did seem to be looking a little "chunky" the last time we saw him.......or maybe it was beacuse he was wearing a jammer.... PS: Jeff.....masters Rule #2 "no doing two a day workouts allowed" See what I mean!!! Those jammers make me look fat! It's back to the briefs for me! You don't have to tell me I'm committing a cardinal sin. Even Frank Busch told me I was crazy when I mentioned it to him. But if something ain't broke don't fix it (that applies to our briefs vs. jammers debate).
  • I LOVE IT! I struggle to finish the last 15 yards (or 30) of 100s for sure and think that 50s on 3:00 is the best ever, and taper is indeed the best word in the English language! I can't wait to read more, I've got two days on my own of swimming to do (and 3 days with a team) so hopefully I can use these workouts. Thanks!
  • As you can see by Kirk's post, the first workout is on the blog. Since I swim at 6:30 p.m., the workout for that day won't be posted until I get home, usually about 8:00. I'd post the workout before I swim, but some days I feel the need to change intervals or sets (as I did yesterday), and I want to be accurate.
  • I have two questions to answer: 1) Kevin, if you were planning to go all-out on all the 75 IMs, then you should have not drilled the last round. In sets like these, you will get tired and you will feel like you can't get your arms over the water. That's the point. You are pushing your body to the breaking point and pushing it further. You're trying to tell your body to continue to swim fast -- and swim correctly -- despite the large amounts of lactate in your body. I'm doing a set tomorrow (Thursday) that will illustrate this. 2) I'm swimming the 100s of all the strokes at nationals, plus the 50 *** and 100 IM. At the USAS meet in June, I'm definitely swimming the 100 ***. I might do the 100 back as well. Yes, Paul, I'm doing a 100 fly in front of more than 50 people. It'll be my first 100 fly and 100 free shaved ... in my life. Come back and laugh when you do a 100 *** at nationals.

I'm glad your doing your Blog Jeff. I'm sure you will find, as I'm sure Ande has, that it really does help a lot of swimmers. One of the questions I have about your work outs is this. Since you are trying to do quality / high intensity yards, what do you do when you start to get tired and break form? Push through and still try to swim fast or back off a bit and work technique? A good example of where I am coming from came last night. I did the following main set. 3 rounds of straight through: 4 X 75 IM (fly back ***) on 1:30 100 Free Pace on 2:00 The first round I went :52-:55 on the 75's Second round :55-:56 Third round I was dead. 1:00-1:05. I drilled the fly and cruised the back and *** working on form. Essentially the last round bled into the warm down. I'm wondering if I approached the whole set wrong and not gone so fast on the first two rounds or should I have gutted out the last round and pushed hard instead of backing off and working technique.
