Not fair, not fair, I don't live in a place that has any kind of energy bars and I'd love to try some of the new ones.
I eat nothing before working out, just coffee, but plan on it by early summer when I get up to the 4 to 8 mile mark. I know I'll need hydration/nutrients, so will devise something for it. But for some weird reason, I need BREAD right after I swim; sure does help but not sure why.
I do remember back in the 60s and 70s, everyone was eating Hershey bars at swim meets; talk about crash and burn; you had to eat boocoodles of them to keep energy up. Wonder what idiot devised that one?
The only Power Bar down here is called Sundowner's Beach Bar and they have wonderful Monkey-la-la's to drink!! Yummmmo!!

I like powerbar and I also like to drink boost at meets
haha i never thought i would meet anyone else under 50 yrs. old that drinks boost. i drink the boost high protein shakes myself
Well 2000 yards later I feel like crud.
Stomach pains; I still bonked at training and did get what I wanted to do done.
Heather will be happy to hear my fly sucked tonight!
Sorry to hear that it was crappy tonight. The fly will take time to come around so don't get discouraged. That happens to me too. Monday was one of these days where swimming a 100 free (front crawl for you Brits) was major effort.
Today was fly day. Between the drills, full stroke fly, and IM's I probably did around a 1000. About half drills and the rest full stroke fly (total yards around 4000). It felt great and the shoulder doesn't hurt a bit (yet).
This is an interesting topic, since most of the energy bars are made for longer aerobic events. And since so many of us want to get out of the pool after 30 seconds, (right Fort?) we can't really be claiming to doing an endurance or aerobic event at all.

I see you've gotten right back in the spirit of things. ;)
Generally, I do like to stick with the out in under :30 rule. I have been known to swim 100s though. And I even go to 1 1/2 hours practices, sometimes gobbling an energy bar or banana on the way while getting ready for engine building. It's usually a huge mistake ... Besides, I prefer 1 1/4 hour practices unless I'm just going nutso crazy with my drills and warm up.
I'm swimming with my old coach tomorrow morning. We're going to kick and chat and practice swimming underwater. He's a stud flyer. Although he didn't like that 200 either. Way over 2:00 .... 2:00 minutes is too much. For one measly event. :thhbbb: We were joking about events and what to swim at meets. We thought some nice 12 1/2s would be a good race distance ...
OK I scarfed a "Power Bar Plus" double chocolate--it was gooooooooood. It stopped me feeling vacant...I won't swim until close to 7 and I can't eat Sausage and Peppers ahead of swimming. Pool Closure guaranteed.
I'm good now, having a cup of tea (incidentally for you colonials, it tastes better if you don't make it with harbour water...just a friendly tip) and a couple of cookies. I'll be all set.
Any of the Triple Threat Power Bars... the Harvest ones are good too. I only eat these as my pre-meet meal. I could not stand them any other time.
Power Gels are evil.
If I eat before practice I will be seeing my food again for sure, I need a good 2 hour window ...
Well power bar was scarfed at about 4:45...I'm good.
I I eat at 6 I have to swim at 8 that means getting home after 10...too late.
I workpout during my lunch hour. To make sure I have enough energy to make it through practice I eat a half of an apple from 45 minutes to an hour before I get in the water. I have never had problem with re-tasting it during my workout... Chocolate PowerBars also work for me but apples are a lot cheaper when prorated over a year.
NEVER any food at all before practice - I don't want to be personally responsible for closing the pool during a workout. But, plenty of Jim Borkowski's favorite recipe for 'spread' on toast after practice. Before a meet, anything with digestible starch and lots of Hammer Gel/Gatorade in the swim bag. An occasional bagel in the middle of a long meet seems to stay down as well. posted by Meldyck
I had a feeling you were a man of impeccable taste Mel!

I think I'm worn out Sunday: 4 hours tiling floor, Monday: 3800yards, Tuesday: not enough to eat, Wednesday: Bonked in training.

Absolutely thrilled! :D
Actually, I want to share my love of fly with all, so it would have been great if you realized how fabulous that stroke is, too!
After a LOT of fly last night my poor little (or not so little) arms were happy to have a completely fly free workout! :woot:
