Hello everyone,
My coach has me kicking for 2 hours or more with fins. The only problem is they were rubbing my heal raw, so I added socks the next day and then came home with 4 very raw and missing skin off 4 of my toes. Today I wrapped and tapped them and wore the socks again, but it diffently affected my work out. I was a good 20 mins slower getting my 5000 yards in. What can I do to ease the discomfort till the skin heals and how can I prevent it from happening again?
Thanks
Kim the newbie swim team swimmer
Petroleum jelly. Works great. Back in college when we were doing a lot of fin work, this saved my feet. Just keep a tub of it in your gym bag. Apply and re-apply generously. However, I don't know how effective anything will be until your current blisters heal a bit.
*FYI, petroleum jelly also works well if you have spots where you suit rubs, like under arms.
If your fins are slightly big on your feet, you can try neoprene sock-booties. These work great. I use them whenever I kick with Zoomers and no longer get any blisters/skin abrasions.
Scuba oriented stores sell these things. The best kind I've used are sawed off at the ankles.
Good luck.
this is NOT an edorsement, but here is the kind of the neoprene sock thing I'm talking about:

This Low Top Fin Sock is designed to be worn underneath snorkeling, free diving, surfing and some scuba diving fins. It is constructed of 2mm neoprene with smooth internal seams for comfort. Add a layer of insulation, improve fit and prevent chafing. Soft bottom (no sole) and a contoured cut for a more natural fit. Can also be used underneath dive boots for additional warmth. Quality materials and construction at an economical price.

Thank you Kristi I will try that and keep it in my bag. I have tomorrow off, so will give me a day without them. Hopefully by Thursday I will be able to wrap and use the petrolum jelly. Thank you for the great advice.

Any swim store will have fin sox... they are well worth the investment! Wear them religiously! Or, if you are a good seamstress, find an old suit and make your own booties!
I hope your feet feel better soon - that hurts so bad!!!!
