Drinking during a workout

Do you drink water (or something else) during a swimming workout? If yes, during what kind of workouts (easy sets, sprint sets, long or short cruises, etc.)? Water polo players and young swimmers (in my local pool) do not drink anything during a workout. What are your experiences about this subject? :drink:

h2o only! Some days I have to drink water during practice (for any type of set) - but other days my stomach is so volatile, that any water in my stomach (while exercising) would make me puke. I will just become very thirsty after about 10 minutes after the workout.
  • I use Accelerade, Powerade or Propel depending on what I grab out of the 'frig. I only sip on it during the workouts usually in between sets. I'll also use Endurox (within 15 minutes preferably) of completing the workout. I find when I adhere to this program I recover quicker and have less side effects of a hard workout on the following day. I do have to admit I haven't been adhereing to the program lately but maybe that can be my New Year's resolution.

i like to drink a mix of hammer gel and some perpetuem. for a 75 minute practice i will consume +/- one liter. for a 120 minute workout i might use a slightly more concentrated mix. post workout i like oj with soy protein powder for recovery. (keeps me from stopping at the quicky-mart for junk)

I'm familiar with powerade, but what are the others (perpetuem, accelerade, propel, endurox). Are they like powerade to supply the minerals lost during a workout or are they sort of energy drink or what else? (I'm from space):laugh2:

H2O only. every 5-10 mins I take a sip. Help reduce cramps and fatigue at the end of my workout. Total replacement of 1 liter approx for the whole workout....maybe would need more but difficult to absorb sometimes. /Per

Usually nothing during practice but I have lots of my beloved bad dehydrating caffeine drinks from when I leave the house until I get to the pool. Our workouts are pretty short, about an hour. Usually our pool temps are a comfy 80F. I'm in the beginner lane since I'm slow, so I end up doing short distance, long rest intervals, mostly drilling and getting stuck behind people who don't get it that you're supposed to leave on the interval or motion the person behind you to go ahead. So I don't think I'm working up much of a sweat nor having the kidneys go into overdrive. I do end up swallowing some pool water, not by choice. I am sure it has not only the H's and O's but also a few yellow electrolytes that I'd rather not think too hard about. Once or twice I have tried to swim a bit after a happy hour. Wow. Even though I thought I was "fine" with gross motor skills intact, my freestyle stunk, couldn't get aligned and all I felt was turbulence and slippage. I even had a dream about that once. The coach was staring at me flopping around and after a few repeats, stopped me and said, "You know, you might have an easier go of it if you weren't holding on to your beer can while you tried to swim."
