Return to form after 2 weeks off

After taking two weeks off from swimming (usually swim 5-6 days a week, 3000-4500 yds/workout). How long will it take to get back to where I was before taking the two weeks off?
  • I don't do quite as much yardage as you for starters. Having said that, I took 2 1/2 weeks off from swimming in mid to late August. Still exercised, not as much maybe. I'd say it took about 3 weeks before I felt like my cardio was ramped back up to former levels. I'm 45; you should bounce back more quickly the younger you are.

2 weeks, very short, did you just go to bed and sleep for two weeks if so 6 weeks. 2 weeks but doing activities not much you may even be better then if you had been training.

you have such an impressive history, george. :applaud: you are very encouraging...i hope i can get back (or close to) my personal bests from 2000. I spent more time swimming in races then training. When we were kids during the war we would have swim meets 2 times a week and when I turned proffessional and swam the circuit we had race every week end and sometimes during the week, not much training in between races. I hurt after every race because I wanted to win money so it took a few days to recover.
  • Status so far: Monday - 3500 - felt okay after 1500, felt sloppy and tired last 2000 Tuesday - 2600 - felt tired and weak the whole 2600 Wednesday - 2900 - felt smooth and fairly strong all the way through the 2900 Times for each day were comparable, just noticed the variations in how my muscles and lungs felt as noted above.

I was out two weeks following "minor" surgery (as we like to say, it's only minor if it's not being done to you). No swimming, no dry land. It took me a full five weeks to get back to where I was.

I have a book that says every day out of the water takes 3 days to get you back to where you were. 14 days out, 46 days to get there.

This book relates to short term lay offs but did say for longer layoffs you should not start to work hard until you have at least 6 weeks under your belt and it could take up to 6 months to get back. For me I will never get back to where I was.

6 months is sooner than I thought, if it's even possible for me to get back to that speed. I hope it's possible. George - Why can't you get back to where you were?
