I'm 55, in reasonable shape. I bike, walk, swim, lug my 21-pound grandson around! I have begun to get serious about swimming and have been in the pool six days a week. Fellow swimmers at Masters this morning adviused that six days a week might ust be too much and suggested back off to every other day. Anyone have exeperiences to share in this regard? Thanks, Mark

You can take a video with a digital camera from three angles and do your own. 3 short videos one swimming directly to the camera, one from the side and another from an angle. Then you can critique your own stroke.

Thanks, Mark My only warning would be : make sure you don't get tired of training that much. Many newbies start like lions, to later quit the pool like bored cats. I see nothing wrong with training 6times a week. In fact, from a general health point of view, while exericising twice or 3 times/week is enough to trigger health improvement, I think the ideal sport prescription would be 5-6 workouts a week, 30-45 min in length, easy to moderate intensity (Murphy et al. 2006) But be careful not to get bored. It may be safer to begin with 3 or 4 workouts/week, to later add 2-3 sessions when you're sure you're not going to quit.

Thank you. I'm not quitting and I'm not bored but my shoulders are a little sore. Mark

Before race season I would workout as many as 14, 2hr sessions a week. Only you can tell whether to back off or not. If you have shoulder problems first try to modify your stroke. If it hurts don't do it.

Not really difficult. It could be just bringing the hand closer to the center line and closer to the body. Also just not reaching too far forward. Some people make it sound difficult I try to take the easy way out. That is what video stroke anaysis is for.

Arman Hammer who was the billionaire CEO of Occidential Oil swam every day of his life and lived well ito his ninetys. Rose Kennedy was a life long swiimer who swam in the sea and lived past 100. The biggest hurdle I agree is if you burn out and become bored. If your feeling good and its working for you go for it. I swim daily myself, may go 7 8 days then skip one or two depending on what I am doing travel ect. I am 52, ..pace yourself and enjoy your swims, sounds like youre doing that!
  • I agree with what has been said. If you are just starting to increase the number of days, build up to it. It took me about a month to get over the sore shoulders when I went from 4 days to 6 days a week. I did find here recently that with my daily morning swim my back feels almost pain free many days and on a few I have actually been pain free. But I am never pain free on Sundays when I don't get to swim first. Donna;)
