I am slow, and when I mean slow, I mean slow. I can do a 26 sec 50 with fins, but without I come in just under 1:20! I think a big part of it is just taking the fins off and doing a lot of kick sets to learn to feel the water better with my feet. I have a good breaststroke kick so I don't think my problem is an overly weak pair of legs, although they could be in better shape. Also, myankles are fairly flexible as I can point my toes and make my feet bend backwards past an even position with my shins. However, I do think that I need to loosen up my ankles when I kick. I feel like I get more out of my kick for those brief moments when I allow my ankles to snap back and forth with my kick. I think I actually need to relax more to kick faster as weird as that sounds.
I suppose the answer to my question is that I simply need to take of the fins and do kick set after kick set until I learn to feel the water better with my feet and become more efficient.
i don't think you need to do 1,000 kick a day
you'd be better off doing 200 or 250 very fast
ie
20 x 25 kick
odds easy on 45 (concentrate on DPK distance per kick)
evens fast on 30
or
5 x ( 75 easy swim, rest 30 sec, 25 k AFAP)
Not really following through as this is the first time to post on this thread, but here's my progress:
Went from barely getting 250yds of kick in per workout to doing 1000yds of kick now. It still takes me about 27 minutes to get it done but the time is dropping. I did a 50 of dolphin kicking on my back (push from wall) in :46, which is a 14 second drop from when I first started. It still takes me about :20 to do a 25yd flutter kick with a board, but I'll keep with it.
:bouncing:
16x100 @ 1:20 - Odds: Sprint Free Evens: EZ
I made sure to six beat kick the whole way on the odds free while keeping my breathing down AND not breathing in or out of turns.
It sure made a difference and I held 1:00 on the odds.
It took more concentration than my usual leg dragging.
But the interval was slow enough so that I was encouraged and motivated to keep up the kick.
Then we did
1x25 FAST
1x25 EZ
1x50 FAST
1x50 EZ
1x100 FAST
1x100 EZ
1x150 FAST
1x150 EZ
3 Rounds
Worked the hard kicking on the FAST.
This looks like a great sprint workout. We usually do something similar. It is great to do good speed work in practice!
In addition to doing some kick sets like 8x100 flutter kick w or without a board, it's helpful to really focus on just kicking FAST during your sprint swim sets.
So today a couple of the sets I did were -

thanks for the update
you're pretty fast kicker
you've made nice improvements
way to go
suggestions
1) that's a lot of kicking for one day
spread the testing over several days
2) correct splitting
1:22 / 1:35 is pretty poor splitting for a 200
13 sec diff is WAY too much
ease up on your first 100
ie
kick the
1st 50 at 90% effort
2nd 50 at 92%
3rd 50 at 94%
7th length at 97%
8th length ALL OUT
go for 0 - 4 sec diff between 100's
36 42 is the same problem as your 200
ease up a bit on the 1st 50 then bring it home
stay 0 - 2 sec apart
get your 25 splits on the 50
even or negative split everything in practice
3) test 25 times too
4) kick 150's to prepare for 200's
075's to prepare for 100's
the time works out to be about the same
update
I haven't done the kick test set for a while
(best times were achieved ~3 months ago,
200@ 3:02, 100 @ 1:21.5, 50 @ 35)
I haven't had as much work to do lately so I've been training harder,
doing things like 1650 kick for time, as I feel my main weakness is transitioning to any distances above 100 yards. I had 05k yards in this week already prior to today, so I figured I would do the set just to mix things up but my legs would be too tired to get any best times in.
just a recap, I kick with a board, all open turns
4 x 200 kick descend
rest
1x200 for time
rest
4 x 100 descend
rest
100 for time
rest
4 x 50 kick descend
rest
50 kick for time.
200: went 2:57 (1:22/1:35)
100: went 1:18 (36/42)
50: went 33.7 (got the lifeguard to time me)
i really worked it hard, almost lost my lunch in the gutter when it was over.
comments? I guess my 100 is a little slow, probably should be more in the 1:15 region. I really need to work up my endurance on the back 100 of my 200 as well.

I could write the book on this subject. I can barely keep up when I'm wearing fins and my lanemates aren't. Without fins I get lapped on anything longer than a 50.
hey mazzy,
welcome
looks like you've made remarkable improvements
going from 45 to 28 is GREAT
I know you can kick faster
keep working on it
Mazzy, a roll start is where the swimmer starts himself and the timer starts the watch when she sees his feet leave the wall or the block.
A regular start is

Hi All,
I'm a new member of club "Horrible Flutter Kickers".
I'm back in the pool last October after over 20 years off; so I'm horrible all over the board too but I'm improving a little bit after every pratice ( 3 times at week, 1 alone (starting from january) and 2 with a group and a coach.)
I'm working on legs in gym and ankle flexibility at home.
About kicking I've read all this great thread and I've manage to improve my kick week after week.
I use a kickboard, a small and light ones, starting from the wall because without it I've a bad balance and need to breath a lot and I'll lost the focus on the legs.
In october was a real pain to even finish a lap with a kickboard, an embarrassing 45 - 50sec for only 25 meters.
Early january, starting to train alone, I've focused more on kicking and I've managed to lower the time at 30.5
last saturday I've lowerer it at 28.1 secs
I looking for to get under 28 tomorrow.
When I'll break the 22 - 23 secs for 25 meters I'll start to train for 50s.
If I can ask, What's a roll start?
Way to go Ande!
george,
being a fast kicker is a critical factor to being a fast swimmer
proven
scientific
fact
I assure you, FAST KICKING is NOT a waste of time
but your little pokes and prods saying that kicking doesn't matter
are a waste of time. And even worse,
many people believe you to be an authority on swimming
providing incorrect information on the topic you're supposed to be an expert in,
erodes your authority.
It's true that arms provide more propulsion than legs in freestyle
but kicking fast is very very important in freestyle.
Fast kicking is critical in breastroke, butterfly and backstroke.
even with out considering SDK.
Maybe back in your day you could slide by and still be world class with a weak kick
but not any more and never again.
watch the 50, 100, 200, & 400 frees at the olympics
those events will be won by fast kickers
even the 800 & 1,500 swimmers are strong kickers

start a thread proposing that
fast kicking is a waste of time
and you will be ridiculed to no end.
I suggest you stop while you are behind.
Ande
When are we going to realize that the kick is in no way the driving force to make us faster. It is the front end that makes us fast.
Sure the kick is important as a balancer, don't waste your time.
