What is your fastest interval for a set of 5x100s (scy)?

John- thank you for your manly metric post. I think I could hold that time for 3 or 4 reps on 1.20 at which time the defibrillator would be used. Please say you were at least winded afterwards.

Paul, It is me you are talking to........ try to remember who is really the "Evil" one. Without trying to offend too many of the Gary Hall worshippers on this site, the 50 free is basically a controlled accident and has more to do with ego, power and stroke technique than aerobic training....... I thought the discussion was about repeat hundreds..... something I have had increased difficulty doing the last 4-5 years. I can't tell if it's the Denver altitude, the grim reaper or my naturally positive outlook on life that has slowly forced me to sit on the walls more and more and not recover in a set . John Smith

Did a set of 15 x 100's SCM (sorry... I don't do yards at my pool) on the 1:20 holding 1:12s last month. The wind is out of my sails these days. The altitude in Denver is no help either. John Smith

  • mark, do you mean the frigid, old, dark and dungeon-y pool in mcdonough hall? or the much nicer and larger 50m x 25m pool in lejune hall? both pools are still around, but the one in lejune is the only one used for varsity meets anymore. the mcdonough pool is used mainly for gym classes and water polo tournements.

    I do 5x100 fly on 3 min and 10x50 fly on 1:30.

I think a really good distance swimmer could make that set and "only" be able to swim about a 4:50 or so. By the way, I noticed Dennis Baker threw down a 4:42 in the 500 at a USA meet over weekend (Washington Open). Not bad for a 44 year old! He also won the 200 fly with a 1:51:eek:

It seems like something that an orthopedist must have dreamed up. Or maybe the local physical therapist, who knows. Re: no entry fee to compete I think you would have to pay me to do it instead of me having to pay an entry fee. I think the spectators should be charged to : 1) Have the pleasure of seeing alot of pain without having to feel it. 2) Covering the cost of Paramedics that would be needed.

I don't think that there are 5 people on the forum that fast in the 500! For discussion sake, suppose one can make the set on 1:00, am I over or undershooting the end of season time (4:45)? I think that a swimmer who can do a 500 in 4:50 would be able to do 5 x 100 on 1:00. That would assume that he/she would hold 58's and basically turn and go. I haven't checked the results page on the USMS site, but there are probably a few men who posted times of 4:50 or better. In fact I'm pretty sure that Jeff Erwin went a 4:46 in Ft. Lauderdale.
  • I stand corrected on Jeff's time. After checking the results, I see that he went a 4:44. Looks like there are 8 people who could make 5 x 100 on 1:00 according to a general theory of needing to swim a 500 in 4:50 or faster. There could of course be others who didn't compete at SCY Nationals last year.
