I think that a swimmer who can do a 500 in 4:50 would be able to do 5 x 100 on 1:00. That would assume that he/she would hold 58's and basically turn and go.
I haven't checked the results page on the USMS site, but there are probably a few men who posted times of 4:50 or better. In fact I'm pretty sure that Jeff Erwin went a 4:46 in Ft. Lauderdale.
