Fina Rules

I just got my new Swimming World and it said that FINA was looking at allowing a dolphin kick in the breaststroke pullout. Does anyone know the status of this?

No, the easiest way would be to go back to the old rule which said you must always remain on your back throughout the turn. Allowing the flip onto the front for the turn is what opened this can of worms in the first place.

  • I avoid backstroke when possible and the current rule helps me because it lets me swim one less stroke backstroke per length, but it is wrong. Its BACKstroke!! You swim it on your BACK.Now it should be called Mostly Backstroke. Thats why I'm against allowing a dolphin kick in breaststroke. If you want to dolphin kick, swim butterfly(this means you Kitajima) (Also please don't call Kitajima little as he is my height)

So I say, do not get fixed on one swimmer, especially when he did have a perfect 200 m. final race, and some other swimmers cheated, but they do not attract your attention?

It is easy to be dq'd in breaststroke I swam a 200 medley and came off my turn and took two strokes of front crawl. Opps I forgot to do breaststroke, after two strokes of crawl I started to swim ***. Those darn judges dq'd me even though I came first. Kurt Pluntke came up to me after me being dq'd and said "I finally beat you HA HA". Come on guys lighten up. George

Okay, boys and girls, now I'm going to get involved. Take this from somebody who *knows*. Katajima dolphin kicked in the 100 to be sure. I mean, holy cow. As far as the 200, his dolphin kicking wasn't as obvious as in the 100 on that turn that was so famously televised and talked about. After the major controversy came up, he may have realized they would be looking for it. Or it may have been something he didn't realize he was doing (this I highly doubt, but I didn't talk to the man, and he'd never tell anybody the truth about it anyway, so it doesn't matter what I think) What I do know is this: Dolphin kick or jet ski, Brendan most likely would not have won the gold in the 100. Don't stone me for saying it, this comes from the source. Brendan was so afraid of repeating what happened at the 2000 trials, he ended up tapering more for Trials (better tapered and in than another four years watching). Truth be told in all, Katajima's race, cheating aside, was more technically perfect, and more put together than Brendan's. Watch the videos, and stop looking at the dolphin kick long enough to watch their turns. Those are definitely not Bren's best turns. Can't we just lay this to rest? Brendan handled everything that happened with dignity and the sportsmanship that we should all have, and he had to deal with the pressure of feeling like he let his country down in the Olympics. And now, in Montreal, the pressure's on him, not on Katajima, to prove something. To prove that the 2004 Trials weren't a tapering fluke, and that he really is the best. Because we all know he is. Wayne, I support your opinion, and Dima, you're making valid points, but YOU'RE BOTH ACTING LIKE CHILDREN with the personal attacks! Let Brendan worry about his competitors. Focus on the future, umm-kay? That little Japanese *** is going down in Canada.

If nationalities can't even agree on its interpretation, doesn't that tell FINA something! Just curious. (And you are definitely entitled to your opinion :p ) I honestly think that the backstroke turn rule is so messed up, that it will keep raising anger and controversy for as long as it exists.I think the easiest way would be to let swimmers take one stroke of crawl at the end and put an end to it.Even with that change we won't see much gliding because you would go slower just gliding and not pulling as turning....It can be so simple, why can't FINA do it?
