hey ande,
great race although you didn't reach your goal.
I'm sure you'll get down 2:00 next time.
beating your personal best is priceless, so make sure you do your best or even better ;)
good luck
I'm sorry you didn't break 2:00 Ande....but you did come very close!! I agree from your splits that you probably would have gone under 2:00 if you went out a tad slower (or maybe just a tad more relaxed) and saved more for the end.....The 200 IM is a tricky event (as you and others have pointed out in another thread here).....I've heard some say that it is an all out sprint....but I don't think it is (unless your someone like Ryan Lochte sp?? or Micheal Phelps)......I think the secret is to try and get out fast during the butterfly and backstroke while still conserving enough energy for the *** and free.....The key IMHO, is staying loose and somewhat fresh during these first two legs while still swimming at a pretty fast rate......Do you think that you may have expended too much energy with the underwater dolphin kicks on backstroke??.....Maybe that extra exertion while holding your breath a little longer took something out of you??
I am swimming a 200 IM (for time at a swim meet) for the first time in 18 years on April 9th (or 10th)....I will let you know what my splits are afterwards......I do think that the 100 IM is more of an all out sprint though.....I am swimming a 100 IM time trial tonite as well as a 100 butterfly time trial tonite (short course meters).....I want to get as close to 1:00 as possible (or hopefully maybe even below 1:00??) in either one or both of them (thinking that about a 5 second conversion from meters to yards would then make a 1:00 convert to a 55 in yards?). I'll let you know the outcome after it is over.

Well I finally swam "part" of my time trial tonite.....Apparently I was wrong when I thought it was last nite (as I found out the hard way when I was the only one who showed up)......I caught up with the woman who offered me the time trial tonite though just before she was scheduled to give a swim lesson. ......I was only able to swim one event since she had to do the lesson and I chose the 100 meter fly (short course meters)......I will "hopefully" do another time trial next week sometime which should include another 100 fly and a 100 IM......In the end I didn't have that great of a race. I blame the majority of it on the poor condition of the starting blocks at our pool (which are not properly bolted down and wobble as a result!)......My start was horrendous as I went into the pool sideways and came up on the left hand lane line......I also had the left side of my googles fill up with water off the start which also set a bad tone for the rest of the race (which felt very awkward throughout!).....My turns were not much better than my start......my final time was 1:03.49......I was out miserably slow in a 30.6!.....Ouch!......I was hoping for something more like 28.5 , 32.0....which would have been 1:00.5 (wishful thinking perhaps?)......Oh well, I can't imagine that my next attempt could go any worse (from a technical perspective that is)......I'll let you know how the next time trial goes when it's over (wish me luck!!)

p.s. Thanks for the Meters to Yards Conversion website Old Flyer.....According to that website my time tonite converts to a high 56 in yards.....I personally think that a high 56 is a little generous though? (from "short course meters to short course yards").....I was thinking more like Ande......5 or 6 seconds which means I was more like a mid 57??....Perhaps the time conversions are a little larger when the times are slower?....Meaning that a 5 second conversion is appropriate for a time under 50 seconds in meters....but a 6.5 to 7 second conversion fits better for times over a minute??

I'd say this makes sense. Since there are the same number of turns in scm and scy you could just try multiplying by the meters to yards conversion factor. This would give 58.0 (63.49 * .9144). Of course, since you're swimming about 9% in further you need to consider that you'll go a little slower due to the additional distance. So this is the reason you add a little less per 100 for faster times.
hello,
that's a decent 100 fly,
you made a few mistakes, be confident that
you'll go faster next time when you correct those problems.
wishing you luck,
ande

hi there,
i haven't swum the 200 IM since 2005 but I imagine I can still go under 2:00 for scy, one morning in practice this season I pushed off a 2:06 200 IM
it's all about how smart I split the fly and back and
how fast my *** and free splits are.
I think I'm faster now than I was in 2005
I might start focusing on it again for when I turn 45
for grins, one year, I might train for the 50, 100, & 200 ***

Interesting to read what transpired then... how is your 200 IM these days?

Pretty safe bet you could eclipse the 2:00 mark with a 2:06 practice push-off. If I were in your shoes I'ld throw one in at a meet if the 200 IM was after your targeted swim, just to see.
Oh, and I'm grateful I'll be out of the 45-49 when you age up with an IM like that!
