Ande, 2:15 for scm and 2:18 for lcm is still awesome.I cannot do that yet.I would not like to swim next to you ...my ego would be hurt getting beat by a guy almost twice my age :-))).But I would love to watch you swim.It must look pretty impressive(yes, these times are impressive to me, but hey, I have only been swimming for 7 months).
My husband and I looked at the last posted results from I think 2002 on-line. While there were Olympians and NCAA champions there, there were also "not-so-great" swimmers. My husband and I wouldn't have come close to the finals or consols but we wouldn't have finished last either... so the qualifying times can't be too fast.
this update just arrived

I'm also pondering how to swim my race
The sprinter in me wants to get up and go for it
But I know I need to relax, save my legs on the Fly and Back,
keep it smooth, breathe a lot, turn well and really work the *** and free.
We'll see,
I'll let y'all know how it went
here's how the race went
I got 48th out of 59 swimmers
I went 2:00.85 in the 200 IM
my splits were
48 Rasmussen, Anders 41 Longhorn 2:00.85
11.37 14.03 25.40
15.17 14.53 29.70 55.10
17.81 18.25 36.06 1:31.16
15.31 14.38 29.69 2:00.85
I dolphin kicked pretty hard off the walls on the back leg
then had little left for the breastroke and even less for the free
but that's my best time for the season
If I'd gotten another chance to swim it
I think I would have gone faster
next time I'm going to try
taking it really easy on the fly and back and save my legs for
the *** and free maybe I'll get under 2:00 this season
thank you kyra,
my next meet is the
South Central Masters Zone Championships in
San Antonio, TX on
Fri April 8 - Sunday April 10th.
In the mean time i'll be doing a combination of
March 7 - 11: Training hard
March 12 - 20: Taking a break the next week cause it's Spring Break and I've got a camp out, beach trip and work training trip,
March 21 - 27: training hard the week
March 28 - April 8th: resting the next two weeks and getting ready to race April 8 - 10

yep we're in agreement. Easy speed is a hard gear to gage.
All I know is next time I swim it, i need to save my legs and I need to be much stronger on the *** and free.
Yes I swam to hard on the back and stayed under too long on the kick.
The 100 IM is a sprint.
the conversion factor from 100 yards to meters is about 5 or 6 seconds. ie
the world record in the 100 SCM Free is 46.25
the american record in the 100 Y Free is 41.6
41.6 / 46.25 = .8993
IM splits work out much better on paper than they do in reality, it's hard to factor what you're capable of when you're fatigued.
Good luck
let us know how you do

I'm sorry you didn't break 2:00 Ande....but you did come very close!! I agree from your splits that you probably would have gone under 2:00 if you went out a tad slower (or maybe just a tad more relaxed) and saved more for the end.....The 200 IM is a tricky event (as you and others have pointed out in another thread here).....I've heard some say that it is an all out sprint....but I don't think it is (unless your someone like Ryan Lochte sp?? or Micheal Phelps)......I think the secret is to try and get out fast during the butterfly and backstroke while still conserving enough energy for the *** and free.....The key IMHO, is staying loose and somewhat fresh during these first two legs while still swimming at a pretty fast rate......Do you think that you may have expended too much energy with the underwater dolphin kicks on backstroke??.....Maybe that extra exertion while holding your breath a little longer took something out of you??
I am swimming a 200 IM (for time at a swim meet) for the first time in 18 years on April 9th (or 10th)....I will let you know what my splits are afterwards......I do think that the 100 IM is more of an all out sprint though.....I am swimming a 100 IM time trial tonite as well as a 100 butterfly time trial tonite (short course meters).....I want to get as close to 1:00 as possible (or hopefully maybe even below 1:00??) in either one or both of them (thinking that about a 5 second conversion from meters to yards would then make a 1:00 convert to a 55 in yards?). I'll let you know the outcome after it is over.

thank you,
2:00.85 is not my life time PR, it's just my PR for this season.
I think my PR as a master is 1:59 something from 1995
My 200 IM PR is 1:51.4 from 1986.
In late 1990 - early 1992 I was in very strong and fast but never swam the 200 IM, I imagine I could have popped a good 200 IM then. I was 20.5 in the 50 y free, 23.6 in the 50 LCM Fr and 25.6 in the 50 LCM FL
now that I'm in my 40's I wipe the slate clean each season.
Though I am convinced I can continue to improve my current times for a few years, maybe into my early 50's if I continue to train hard. Though I think I'm going to change my focus event each season. right now it's the 200 IM. I'm considering focusing on the 500 next short course season.

I'm sure you'll get down 2:00 next time.
beating your personal is priceless, so make sure you do your best or even better ;)
good luck
If you are swimming LCM time trial, you should divide by 1.11 to get an estimate SCY time. 1:00.0 for 100 IM or 100 fly is equivalent to www.swiminfo.com/.../conversions.asp
How'd you do on your time trials?
