I am constantly surprised that when I do my training sessions at my local pool, there are very few other people apart from myself ,that drink water while they are training.I drink about 1 litre for a 1 1/2 hour session.Do others take in liquids while training or am I an exception??

I'm one who does NOT take water with me to the pool. When I have taken water with me, I would never drink it, so I just stopped. There's a weird reason for that: swimming makes me burp a lot, and the full feeling I get from a belly full of water is that much more unpleasant. What I do instead is drink water before getting into the pool, and usually a bottle afterward. I drink a lot of water throughout the rest of the day, too, so I seem to keep hydrated. A lot of those people who walk around dehydrated all the time are dehydrated because they don't drink enough throughout the day, not because they don't drink enough when they exercise. If you load up on water during and after your exercise, but then don't drink enough at rest later, you'll still be dehydrated. Keep in mind, however, that my workout is only about 70 minutes. If my workout were to increase in yardage and time, I would probably have to take some water along with me.

although my pool is pretty clean...sometimes I see the random hair band, or bobby pin at the bottom of the pool...this always makes me want to run like hell--now think about drinking that! Puhlease--I think I would stop for the set. And Shaky...fried chicken? Why don't you find another pool, dear man? And, whatever happened to that terrific idea of yours with that apartment complex, or hotel pool hopping? Did you chicken out, and put that chicken in the Y's pool? ;)
  • Ok, this by far has got to be the funniest topic in a while! The great debate on water. Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink....hee hee If I may add my own two and a half cents.... I drink so much water during the day, if I don't cut myself off at least 3 hours before practice, I have to pee sooooo bad during practice, I'd have get more of a workout hopping in and out of the pool to use the bathroom. Good grief, not to mention the likely hood of catching a chest cold or something doing so much walking around.....yesh! Anyway, not long ago I was out with my sister right after a practice and as we were driving along she was laughing at me for no apparent reason. I asked her what was so dang funny....she couldn't stop laughing and told me how funny it was I just spent 90 minutes in the pool and watching me drink a bottle of water after practice was oddly funny to her. As for the accidental consumption of pool water, I can't explain that bizarre phenomenon except for I usually get my taste of chlorine when someone is swimming toward me and we pass as they feverishly kick. Now that's what I call a sneak attack! I try and breathe on the other side when a swimmer is coming at me, but those blasted lane ropes....gees, they just get in the way of vision sometimes.

I sure hope exrunner is kidding. Drinking chlorine is not a good idea.

i too end up with about a cup of chlorinated water inside,i spend a lot of time trying to avoid this,i drink water before and pure orange after training, but i always end up with some poolwater drunk,i too dislike this, but when i swim in the sea i accidentally drink that too and that gives me severe cramps and all sorts of problems.I read that taking water with you for training was good,at my pool if i did this ,by the time i got to one end (25m)when i looked back my bottle would have dissapeared!!!

When I first started swimming in the States, I couldn't understand where all of the 'toys' came from- now I know people (myself included) can bring all sorts of stuff to practice and not worry about them getting pinched!!

My water bottle seems to be pretty safe... its the Zoomers I have to go looking for. Kids will take them without asking in a heartbeat... LOL, guess they realize I will say no, and its easier to get forgiveness than permission. A couple of times I've actually had to swim around in the shallow end looking at kid's feet to find them. Picture that--grown woman with goggles and cap on, swimming around the various groups of kids looking at their feet. My 'scales did get ruffled' one time when a kid did ask, I said no, and he waited until I was swimming a set and not paying attention, and took them anyway. Thank goodness they haven't swam away yet. Exrunner may or may not be kidding, but I recently read an article written toward distance/open water/triathlete swimmers that actually suggested sipping pool water while they swim, since they may not want to stop during a long set. My first thought was "Gross!" (especially since the water in my pool smells like fried chicken). But the point is that there are at least some people out there who think pool water is fit for human consumption.

I am not sure whether I was kidding either (it depends on whether you chuckled), but I am less concerned about chlorine than I am about all the first-graders using the pool from a nearby school. You know about first-graders, don't you (cf. South Park episode)?

But throughout most of the summer, after almost a year had passed since the last cleaning, the water did in fact stop smelling like chlorine and started smelling like fried chicken. I would get out of the pool smelling like a KFC employee and desperately want to get into the shower. Sometimes the smell would give me heartburn. Also, since they cleaned it, I don't feel nearly as greasy when I finish my workout, and you can now see clearly under water from one end of the pool to the other, where before the cleaning the underwater visibility was limited to about 15-20 meters. I'm enjoying the cleaner pool while it lasts, but I figure that by May it will start to stink again. I almost posted something about it back in the spring when it first became noticeable, but I didn't think anyone would believe it. Don't drink the water! As for my trespassing adventure, I just never got around to it.
