I have a meeting in Mesa at 10:30. My flight out is not until 5:30. Using the "Places to swim" search on USMS, looks like there are a few mid day workouts in the area. Any suggestions?

Ok Keith, you'll be impressed. Last Thurs. I did 6 efforts on the 6 minutes: straight 200, broken 200 (4 x 50 w/ 10 sec rest), straight 150, broken 150 (3 x 50), straight 100' broken 100 (2 x 50). Needed a long nap that afternoon. Nice. Now I must apologize for something I said about you. Told my friends around here I worked out in Denver with a guy who can blow me away in a 100 but probably can't finish a 200. I stand corrected.
  • After warmup 4x100 IM on 1:30 12x50 kick on :55 4x(25 fast kick, 25 build swim, 25 fast swim, 25 swim 1 breath) all 25's on :35 6x(100 AFAP, 100 easy) on 4:00 for the 200 I appreciate being able to do any swim workout when traveling, so I'm not making any distance guy comments. Keith, sounds like a distance workout to me.

Keith, sounds like a distance workout to me. I thought of you on the last set. "Hmmm, I wonder how Rich would deal with being asked to do 6 complete 100's in the same day."

I probably have to go back next week. My main meeting will be in Scottsdale, but I am completely useless at swimming by myself. In Scottsdale, you can swim with Sun Devil Masters at Cactus pool. They have morning and noon workouts. I live near Cactus pool, but I 's worth the drive.

Interesting juxtaposition against the workout at Clovis North the next day: after warmup 3x100 desc. on 1:30 6x50 on :50 breathing every 3 strokes odd, 5 strokes even. 8x25 on :30, alternating fast & easy 8x150 on 2:00, 100 free, 50 stroke 4x25 on 1:00 no breath 10x50 on 1:00 doing an extra flip turn in the middle of every lap. This forces you to get back up to speed from a dead stop after flipping over mid pool. 12x100, 4 on 1:20, 4 on 1:15, 4 on 1:10, no breaks.
  • Wonderful! Thanks so much for the suggestions, fresnoid and pwb. A big-city pool en plein air will be a novel experience. Looks like there is good hiking in southern AZ as well. Who knew...

  • Bump... Currently plan to arrive at Sky Harbor Airport around 10:30 on Wed., March 27. After collecting luggage and rental car, I expect an 11 a.m. departure from airport, with the day's (leisurely) destination the Grand Canyon. I'd enjoy a noon swim (need not be a full-bore workout) but have no idea where anything is in relation to aiport, only that Phoenix is bigger than I ever imagined. Any suggestions?
  • If you want to do your own thing, head to Cactus Pool in Scottsdale (www.scottsdaleaz.gov/.../cactuspool) and you'll have the option of either dropping into the noon Sun Devil Masters workout or grabbing, very likely, your own lap lane. The noon Masters workout there is usually very low key. Entry fee is like $3. In addition, if you want to try swimming at altitude in a very cool pool, contact Northern Arizona Masters up in Flagstaff (nau.edu/.../) and time your travel through there to grab a workout here -- www.nauathletics.com/.../WallAquaticCenter.jpg. This is THE place that international elite teams go for their altitude training.
