I have a meeting in Mesa at 10:30. My flight out is not until 5:30. Using the "Places to swim" search on USMS, looks like there are a few mid day workouts in the area. Any suggestions?

You should come swim with Mesa Aquatics Club Masters. We have noon workouts at Kino Aquatic Center and Skyline Aquatic Center. Kino is pretty close to the 101 and 202. Skyline is much further east.
  • Thanks for the response Katie. Noon at Kino might be perfect for me, but I would not have known without your input because it was on the 2nd page of the USMS search. . Wait, this isn't going to be a Paul Smith kicking, stroke & sprint deal is it? Pretty sure the noon workouts are 100% non-freestyle, and mostly underwater SDKs. ;) but you'll never know for sure unless you're there.
  • Keith -- Mesa is definitely the place to go both for the workout and the location. Both Phoenix Swim Club and Sun Devil Masters will/should have noon workouts, but they'll be farther from Mesa. The city of Scottsdale pools at Cactus Park (www.scottsdaleaz.gov/.../) and El Dorado (www.scottsdaleaz.gov/.../eldopool) have lap swimming from 6am to 1pm. El Dorado is closest to Mesa and a fine enough pool, but Cactus is a better pool. Not sure if you're able to drop into ASU's Rec Center pool, but it might be worth a call to see if you can if you only have time in the afternoon -- www.swimmersguide.com/.../Detail.cfm. FYI and IMHO, www.swimmersguide.com is a better place to go and gets you to pool information much quicker than the USMS search function. Patrick, thanks for the great info. My wife and I are coming to Scottsdale the first week in March for a little winters' break and I was hoping to get in several workout. I'm also thinking of entering the Sun Devils meet on the 3d which looks like lots of fun. Rich

Just make sure to pack your fins for the special 50. When you're here, I'd highly encourage you to drop into each of the major Masters programs -- Mesa, Phoenix and Sun Devil -- as there are some great coaches and people across all of them. If you're just looking to do your own thing, though, and will be in Scottsdale, Cactus is the best place by far. You're almost guaranteed to have your own lane and very often multiple lanes to choose from ... while paying, I think, only a $3 or $4 drop-in fee.

The Sprinter's Spectacular meet was a blast last year and this year should be no different.

After warmup 4x100 IM on 1:30 12x50 kick on :55 4x(25 fast kick, 25 build swim, 25 fast swim, 25 swim 1 breath) all 25's on :35 6x(100 AFAP, 100 easy) on 4:00 for the 200 I appreciate being able to do any swim workout when traveling, so I'm not making any distance guy comments.

My main meeting will be in Scottsdale, but I am completely useless at swimming by myself.

  • I thought of you on the last set. "Hmmm, I wonder how Rich would deal with being asked to do 6 complete 100's in the same day." Ok Keith, you'll be impressed. Last Thurs. I did 6 efforts on the 6 minutes: straight 200, broken 200 (4 x 50 w/ 10 sec rest), straight 150, broken 150 (3 x 50), straight 100' broken 100 (2 x 50). Needed a long nap that afternoon.
