Do most people here wear a swim cap when you do your workouts? The reason I'm asking is because I noticed that I seem to be one of the few who wears a swim cap at my pool.
Where I swim most guys don't wear caps, but a few do.It is unusual to see a woman who is a serious swimmer without a cap.For workouts, my wife loves lycra caps. Her head doesn't overheat and it never slips, problems she has had with latex and silicone caps.
Ditto where I swim. My biggest issue with people not wearing caps is when I pick up a strand of hair between my fingers while taking a stroke. Bugs me more than it should, I suppose. (It's not my hair. Mine is too short and too scarce to ever do that.)
Mostly do not wear swim caps. However, I do wear one when swimming outdoors in cool and/or rainy weather. I will also wear one when at a swim meet.
I feel a swim cap allows me to swim just a little bit faster than the rest of the pack. I have no preference lycra or silicone, both seem to work just as well for me.
I never used to, but now I always wearing a cap during workouts. The only thing I don't like is your goggle strap has a tendency to move around (even come off) a lot more than if you're not wearing a cap.
I only wear a swim cap in a workout when either:
The air or water temp are too cold, or
I want to simulate racing conditions

That grosses me out too especially when you can't get rid of it:D. That's why I wear a cap. My hair isn't long but not totally short(kinda the Leonardo DiCaprio style). I always assumed that too much chlorine might dry out the hair too much but now that I think of it, I doubt the cap will really make a difference.
I do tend to get hot from my silicone cap, especially after sprints it feels like my head is on fire. Maybe I'll just swim without one in the future.

Define air temp "too cold"...
" or less anyway, usually less. I've just always worn a cap at meets, except a couple times at high school state or college nats when I took the razor to my head.
Another reason to wear a cap is for visibility while swimming open water.

On my age group team when I was 10 you had to wear a cap if your hair was longer than 1". I started wearing a cap then and have worn one ever since. I find the cap does help prevent your hair from getting fried. Especially if you shower before.
