Ocean Workout

Can anyone offer some suggestions for a ~30 minute ocean swim workout (idk, maybe in terms of intervals, speed work/build...whatever you might typically do while training in open water...do you do any drills/stroke work, etc?). I have searched but can only seem to find previous postings on open water training sets in the pool. I'm going on vacation to Destin in a few weeks and want to continue swimming that week and thought it would be a nice change of pace. :) Thanks!
  • 30 minute open water workout Enter water Turn left 90 degrees Swim parallel to shore for 15 minutes Turn around Swim back. Don’t worry about intervals, speed work…whatever. Just swim.
  • If you will be swimming by yourself wear a brightly colored swim cap and tell the lifeguards your plan. Maybe someone could walk the beach while you swim to keep an eye on you.

Any time I do open water swims by myself, I wear my "Safer Swimmer" buoy that I bought from the ISHOF (International Swimming Hall of Fame). Click the link in the previous sentence to see a photo or go to www.ishof.org/.../ssd.htm.

haha, thanks for the tip coach! That's kind of what I thought but hoped that was not really how open water swimmers train while outside of a pool. SOunds entirely boring to me! If not for the nice scenery, I will probably be happy to get back to my black line and pace clock.

Thanks, that's a really great thing to have in open water for many reasons! • Boring??? NEVER boring swimming in the open ocean...tides are constantly changing so no swim is exactly the same. I get a far more streneous workout in the open water than I ever do in a boring pool workout. Sometimes you get the endless pool effect because of the tide/current.
