I have been to numerous races at this venue. It is very nice, plenty of parking and pretty. I am going and try to convince some of my teammates as well. Some other items of note:
1. There are facilities but I hope they will bring in a few extra port o pottys.
2. The "beach" is at the bottom of a small hill which affords a ton of viewing area for spectators. There is some shorline as well for chairs.
3. The water will be between 70-80. Here's a URL to a fairly unsophisticated water temp reading. www.lakenormansweb.com/.../index.php. This is from Lake Norman which is just a few miles north but it is all part of the same river lake system so the temp might be 1 degree warmer at the race.
4. The water is murky. Visibility is extremely limited. You will do a ton of sighting.
5. That early in the day the water will be glass, zippo waves or even ripples.
6. I've never had to swim directly into the rising sun here. Let's hope it is the same this year.
I'm excited about this swim and hope many attend.
Nice of USMS to have this as their lead feature:

In terms of local sites, I'm happy to note that the Carolina Raptor Center gets mentioned before NASCAR.
I'd love to go but I'm not sure I can get clearance from Command Central to go to a race so soon after nationals. Maybe if I sell it as a family vacation...yeah, that's the ticket...

Yeah, while you're swimming at the lake, your family can spend the day at Lowe's Motorspeedway, drinkin' beer, spittin' terbaccy, and cussin' at the drivers driving the wrong model vehicle!!!
Haven't been to Charlotte for a long time, but there used to be a very nice museum called Discovery Place or something that's great for kids. Geek will be able to address that.

The Charlotte NASCAR race is May 30th, which will mean horrific traffic on race day. If you are leaving on Sunday, either do so very very early if headed up 85 or while the race is in session. Actually, just avoid I-85 completely if you can around the race track (exit 48).
Discovery Place is in uptown, about 15 miles south of the swim race. Kids love it and it's a good diversion. However, with the race in town, uptown will be jam packed.

Ain't nothin wrong with that kinda day. Esp. if someone runs Jeff Gordon's rainbow douche car into the wall.

According to the map they reference, the race will start SW, turn NW and finish NE, so right breathing going out and left coming in may be called for.
Just registered online. Also got a room at the Country Inn from hotels.com, since the date for special rate had passed. Base rate was cheaper than the special rate. Other hotels in the area available from hotels.com.
Geek, I'll be the one in the yellow TRYM t-shirt. Trying to talk some team members into joining me, but likely suspects will be out of town and country that weekend.
Ya'll come visit us in NC!
