Ok, so the more they email me, the more I get nervous about the water temp. Last year it was 69 which stung to get in, but it made for a nice swimming temp. By the end, though, my fingers and toes felt a little numb, but that could have been tired (??).
But this year, it could be up to 10 degrees colder?! What to do when the coolest water I can find here in Cincinnati is 80?

I am so worried about the cold, those emails are getting me wondering it it will be still that cold by the 12th . Think I am going to push through and do non wetsuit. Got a Blueseventy nero swim skin going to try it in lake Michigan this week let you know it its at all warmer. Guess these are ok to use in non wetsuit division. Seem like when I put it on for a few minutes got kinda warm in it. See you all there being cold together!!
57....not sure I would make it. it was 60-61 that last time I was out with out a wetsuit and after 30 minutes it felt like something was pounding on my biceps and upper chest. total swim time was 60 minutes, about 45 minutes later i was at home on the sofa and still felt cold!
there is the after drop effect. getting dry and out of the water will not warm you up, and indeed your core temp can continue to drop after your swim.
try the old vaporizer trick.... pot of boiling water, towel draped over head, inhale the steam. it will warm you from the inside. (or jump into the sauna)
I get out when I feel my stroke getting sloppy or falling apart, even if I don't feel cold.
Having said that, I'm sure it'll be fine!
I'll be in at least once this weekend and will do my best to raise the water temp ;)
hey all went swimming in Lake Michigan today. It is very cold at first thought I might not be able to do it but, thought well I am hear might as well go for it. Not bad once got moving, but got in very very slow to let my body get adjusted to the cold. Also wore my blueseventy nero swim skin. Felt a slight buffer from the cold wore 2 swim caps and that helped the most. So in conclusion it was not as bad as thought so do not fear.:coffee: thought this would be a good mental picture for everyone hot drinks to go with cold water!!
Sorry to hijack this thread, but I wanted to post about the Big Shoulders entry form. The section about USMS registration after 9/1 was modified. The updated PDF files will show up in the near future on bigshoulders.org and the USMS competition calendar.
The older version listed two different fees. The actual fee depends on the LMSC and club fees. Rather than mention a specific value, the new text states that the USMS registration fee is reduced (after 9/1), and the specific information is available on the online registration page.
I've been practicing with the silicone against my head/googles/and big shoulders cap (latex) on top. It works pretty well. I've been swimming in 75-77 degree water and I think it's keeping me warmer!
