Big Shoulders 2009

Ok, so the more they email me, the more I get nervous about the water temp. Last year it was 69 which stung to get in, but it made for a nice swimming temp. By the end, though, my fingers and toes felt a little numb, but that could have been tired (??). But this year, it could be up to 10 degrees colder?! What to do when the coolest water I can find here in Cincinnati is 80?
  • I got that e-mail today too. And if it's 57, I'm thinking wetsuit division. I am really hoping for a freak hot spell in Chicago for the next week or so. My husband keeps joking saying "that's a short swim for you. You won't be in there long." Maybe I'll let him swim for me.

I liked the water temp last year, but I don't think I can do below 60. In fact I'm really scared. Lets hope for a heat spell in Chicago!

what i wouldn't do for some 57 degree water right about now... you guys are going to have a great swim! its a beautiful course in a fun city. i hope to swim there again soon.
  • 57....not sure I would make it. it was 60-61 that last time I was out with out a wetsuit and after 30 minutes it felt like something was pounding on my biceps and upper chest. total swim time was 60 minutes, about 45 minutes later i was at home on the sofa and still felt cold!
  • I'm game to try anything, though, but somewhere in the last couple of years I at least try to be prudent. So not that 57 would scare me off, but it typically takes me about an hour and twenty to do the 5K. Will I last? When I make the turn at the halfway point what should I look for to know that it's safe to keep going? From that point, there is about 1500m before I'd be back close enough to the sea wall to climb out early if I had to.
  • When I make the turn at the halfway point what should I look for to know that it's safe to keep going? Good question and I wonder if there's a water temp where the director(s) will allow wetsuits only? That's a lot of people for a small group of lifegaurds to keep an eye on. I have a feeling I'll swim (sans wetsuit) regardless of the temp and I do worry a little that I wouldn't recognize the warning signs of hypothermia. I don't have much experience in water under 65 or so. That said, I think the chances of the water being under 60 on the day of the race are pretty slim. Let's hope!
  • I'm nervous as well. I live in Florida and the coldest I've swam in was 69 F last year. Anything much below that and I don't know if I can hack it. Thinking wetsuit division as well, but we'll see come race day.
  • I think being dazed and confused is one of the first signs of hypothermia. I am afraid I wuldn't have the presence of mind to get out! For some reason I really think the water will warm up.
  • It will be a lovely, sunny day, swimmers will get the "architectural tour" of the harbor, and everybody will have a good time. :)
