  • Ande, For we competitively inexperienced folk, can you remind us what the purpose of a time trial is? I'm especially confused because these time trials all seem to be in events which are contested at the Trials. Thx, Skip Time Trials give swimmers a chance to swim an event or two they they didn't have OT cuts. Like my frends son made the 2 & 4 free but not the 1 so he's time trialing the 100 free. They usually happen 10 or 15 minutes after prelims. If you look at the heat sheet, many of the entry times end in .?0 like .50 or .00, meaning the person who entered them made up the time or guessed it. But OT entries have to be verified in the USA Swimming Swims Database and are exact times.
  • Ande, For we competitively inexperienced folk, can you remind us what the purpose of a time trial is? I'm especially confused because these time trials all seem to be in events which are contested at the Trials. Thx, Skip The reason for time trials is that it gives the swimmer at the meet a chance to swim there primary event or another event rested, shaved, and tapered. Lets say you missed an Olympic Trial cut in another event but you were very closed to making it, you have a chance to make that cut for future meets like the US Open next month in Indianapolis. If you had a bad swim in your primary event it gives you chance to swim it again for improvement. Very rarely do you see swimmers that are in the finals and semi finals swim time trials because they are swimming enough events and don't need the time standards to make qualifying standards for future meets. Plus its pretty draining on the swimmer to wait until the end of the day to swim these when you might have a semi final or final in the evening session. For swimmers not making the semi finals and needing time standards for there primary or other events, this is great because you do not have to spend $ to go to another meet and you are here and if you are not swimming something for 3 days, its good to try a time trial. With this many swimmers in the meet and the 10 lane facility, this is great for the host and the crowd because they can see more swimming especially if you have family members or teammates swimming trying to make time standards. The swimmers that swim these are not usually the swimmers in the semi finals or finals and there purpose is different than those swimmers contesting to be on the Olympic squad.

Thx, Skip And just to elaborate beyond what ande said...when you spend all that time preparing for a meet, you want to get as much out of that taper as possible. They could swim in a meet the following week, but in theory they are at the fastest moment this week. The swimmers are trying for personal bests, other qualifying times (Nationals, Jr. Nats, US Open), or records (LSC, NAG, etc). *edit* looks like Frank beat me out haha.
  • The swimmers that swim these are not usually the swimmers in the semi finals or finals and there purpose is different than those swimmers contesting to be on the Olympic squad. And even though we see the guys like Lochte who qualified in darn near every event, the majority of the swimmers at Trials probably only made cuts in an event or two. TTs give these swimmer more opportunities to swim. By the way, there was somewhat of a flap last week when USA Swimming announced that due to the number of competitors at Trials they would not be running time trials. There must have been enough of a backlash that they partially reversed their decision and now are offering a limited number of time trials.
  • Phelps & Lochte raced the last 50 in their 200 free semis 25.91 Lochte & 25.99 Phelps are pretty fast

For example Michael Branning and Faith Johnson are entered in the 50 Free in Trials, but they are also Time Trialing the 50 today. Side note – technically the time trials are a separate meet. They are held on a time available basis at all national championship and trial meets, under a separate sanction from the LSC. USA-S 207.10 I guess they figured that there would be available time.
