The next Canadian Masters Swimming Championships will be held 5/20/2011 to 5/23/2011 in Montreal. I believe it will be SCM.
Unfortunately the Masters Swimming Canada site has very little information on the meet as yet. I would like to correspond with someone who knows more details, including venue, which events are on which dates, event order, etc.
Any ideas? Thanks!
I know, I love Montreal!
That sounds great. I was just asking because I know that results haven't always been submitted to USMS in the past. Glad the pool will be to "spec," but that doesn't exactly answer whether it will be measured. As you may be aware, USMS guidelines on this issue are different than Canadian guidelines. USMS won't accept times without a pool measurement as outlined in the Guide to Operations.
I'm sure there will be great competition.
I swam in the 2009 CA championships that were held in Toronto (along with Glen, Bill, Karlyn, Don and the infamous Gail Roper). I would not worry about pool measurement and time submission to USMS and FINA. Our Canadian counterparts are competent and will do due diligence (en.wikipedia.org/.../Due_diligence) in terms of submitting times and completing the right forms. They ran a great meet!
Besides Gail Roper, I had the chance to see Jaring Timmerman swim the 50 free in 77.12 seconds (1:17.12) - 22.88 seconds faster than his age. Very cool!
Bonne chance mon ami!

J'espère que c'est vrai.
However, I have heard that sometimes they don't measure and, if they don't, our times wouldn't count for USMS purposes. I am going to confirm in advance with the meet director that they will measure the pool and sign this form: www.usms.org/.../gto_rectab_pool_measurement.pdf. I don't want to travel and not have my times count!
It really does sound like a great meet.
Thanks for the note. I didn't realize that. I had assumed that it was 50M x 25M so that they'd run short course meets width-wise. I'm still not sure where I'm going to be that weekend, but I'm intrigued by the idea of swimming an LCM meet. From the pictures I've seen, I'm also assuming it's still a fast, deep pool?
At least one world record was set in the pool. I think the depth varies between 1.8-2.5m.
The Victoria pool is very fast, many world records when they hosted PanPacs awhile ago. Fort, all you need to do is bring poutine daily to the Montreal officials and not only will you get cooperation but a free pass from evilstroke disqualification as well.

Thanks. I'll figure out what I'm doing that weekend in a couple of weeks.

Check out some of the wondrous varieties you can gorge on after the meet -- montreal.about.com/.../Best-Poutine-in-Montreal.htm.

I have been in email contact with one of the meet managers. Basically, I was told they would not submit times to USMS, which is fine. But I was also told they won't measure the pool. They measure the pool once a year because of the expense.
Here is what I was told specifically:
"We have no plan of submitting times to USMS. Just like worlds for example, it’s USMS jobs to retrieve times done by their members our side the USA. Having said that, our nationals have a long history of having US swimmers attending. We also have a good relationship with USMS. We will have numerous USMS members participate at this years meet. I know that USMS knows where to get the results and I’m sure they will.
As for pool measurements, this pool is regularly host to nationals meets and in accordance with SNC and FINA rules it is measured every year. We are not responsible for any US records that you would beat, USMS is, but for any world record it is our job to fill out all applicable documents and forward them to FINA. We will have someone responsible for this. Be assured that if your where to beat any records, the pool will be legal, times will be official and FINA documents will be sent." ...
"Yes we do have a bulkhead. FINA rules state that the pool needs to be measured by a qualified technicien who is licensed to do so once per year. Leeway is very small and measures are taken with a laser. Each lane must be measured. Cost is about 1000$ each time. I'm sure you understand that we can't do this everyday and measuring with a tape measure would not meet criteria's. We are expecting numerous nationals and world records at the meet. We have lot's of experiences with such meet and have never had a record not awarded. We've hosted this meet back in 03 with a large # is US swimmers attending and did not measure the pool each day."
In light of this, how can times count for USMS? Does a swimmer have to bring their own laser measure? Very odd situation where one could get a WR but not a NR?

Which criteria would not be met by using a tape measure? I've been at Masters meets (both meters and yards) where a tape measurement of each lane was done prior to each session. It doesn't take long to do.
It would suck to set a record and then have it be discarded due to something like this. I'm sort of glad that I'm not fast enough to have to worry about it! :cane:

If the meet director is talking about FINA *masters* rules, this statement is incorrect. FINA requires a one-time measurement/certification of the pool length and only requires that it be re-measured if there is a structural modification. FINA does not say that a laser must be used nor do they require a licensed surveyor; that is left up to the individual country.
USMS requires that bulkhead placement be verified by measuring the two outside lanes and a middle lane after the session. Steel tape is sufficient for this, as outlined on the pool measurement form. FINA apparently does not require that bulkhead placement be verified.
I suppose you have to use your considerable charm and powers of persuasion to get them to do it. :)
For international pools I just send an email to Walt. Maybe if he gets tired of answering he'll send me a similar file for those pools and I'll upload it too... :)
Would be practical to have that list availablle:applaud:
Around here, Europe, most organizers do not want to deal with that request.
For now, have decided to swim mostly at pools already on USMS database :)
As Iceland is not at the USMS database have to decide if will swim as USMS affiliated or portuguese affiliated, suppose will be easier to ask permission to the portuguese federation to swim than having the pool measured:bitching::D
