How much should the wrist be bent?

My recent wrist injury led me to think about this. During the freestyle and backstroke pull phase, how much should you bend the wrist of the pulling hand? Is it the less the better? How about not bent at all? Bending too much either way apparently invites injury as in my case.

There should be a slight flex in the wrist due to the resitance of the water but there should not be much of a bend. I would say the angle at your wrist (if 180 degrees is normal) should not be less than 165-170 degrees at most.

Paul (and anybody else), what do you think of this gadget? www.swimoutlet.com/.../6334.htm Lindsay posted a video about it on another thread. Here it is: Finis - Forearm Fulcrum on Vimeo I asked for opinions on the other thread about it, but nobody responded. So, I thought I would try here. :) Thanks! :D
  • i have two (child and adult sized). I don't like either because they flip around too much. I do have weenie forearms. I think fist drills and big paddles accomplish the same thing.

Maybe I'll try mine again tomorrow!
  • I saw them at Austin in 2008 and thought they would be great, then I tried them for about a month and they are now sitting in my tub of swim toys and have been there since August 2008. Not a huge fan, maybe because the adult one is too small for me? I dunno but it just never clicked for me. Thanks for the feedback, Paul. Any swim toys (or tools; however you choose to view it) you DO recommend? :)

Thanks for the feedback, Paul. Any swim toys (or tools; however you choose to view it) you DO recommend? :) Front mount snorkel. Great for working the lungs on long freestyle sets, kick sets and when doing drills. I like it for drills, when first learning one, because I don't have to think about timing in the breath. As I become more familiar with the drill, I won't use the snorkel, so I can work on breathing as well. Plus, I use it on almost all freestyle sets that are over 300 m. I hate long boring sets, figure I might as well kill my lungs while being bored to death.
