Anyone sprained wrist/hand during a pull?

Yesterday I sprained the part between my wrist and hand on the thumb side during either freestyle pull or backstroke pull. I was not aware when it happened, but after one lap, I suddenly felt the pain and the hand couldn't make a pull any more (very painful and weak). It hurts a lot and hasn't got any better. The hand is incapable of doing anything in certain directions, even washing hands. I don't know how this could happen :( A pull couldn't have broken a bone, could it? Has this happened to anyone else?
  • That sounds really bad. I don't even know how to prevent it in future as I still don't know what I did wrong--I just swam as I always did  Are you sure you didn't do something else with your wrist/hand that caused it to be slightly injured before you swam and then the swimming was the straw that broke the camel's back? That's how I hurt my shoulder last year. Helped with an activity that put strain on my shoulder in an unusual way then swam that evening and it started hurting. I'm almost positive it was the other activity that caused the injury and not the swimming. Either way, hope it feels better soon!

Yep, I've done that. It sounds like you sprained a tendon that attaches the thumb to the wrist. Basically hurts so bad you think you broke your wrist! Rest and ice with some basic pain reliever/anti-inflammatory should help. If you still want to swim, maybe you could try a splint to hold your thumb in place and reduce pressure on the wrist. Get ready for a lot of kick sets!!! Get well soon!

Well, my sprain was a different case. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so my tendons/ligaments are thicker and more damaged than normal. With meds, ice, and gentle stretching, I would think you could start lightly using your hand in two weeks. That may seem like forever, but it's best to let it heal so you won't reinjure it. As with all sprains/strains, most docs and PTs say 6-8 weeks for full healing.

Thanks, that is possible, as I did carry heavy stuffs not long before going swimming. That may have caused minor injury already, but swimming definitely triggered it. Looks like one has to be careful all the time. As for feeling better, thanks (although it's not any better at all as of now) :)

Probably it's more about wrong position than about the power :) Now I believe it happened during a backstroke pull because it hurts when the hand makes outward turn. Perhaps I over-flexed my hand.
