I found a pool for the summer. my limit is 1- 1 1/2 hours on the pool per day . I do dryland 2-3 times a week and I want to swim 3 times a week. I want to improve my butterfly and freestyle before college. know any good workouts or sets i can do I can build up to before season starts. (btw this is D3) Heres my time last season: I was 5'10 and weighted 205 50 free: 26.5 100 free:1:01.5 50fly:31.74 100fly:1:24
  • Can you train with a masters group or will you be training solo? I would look at the workouts section of the forums, most of the workouts there have a little bit of everything to work on your conditioning. Also check out the blogs for workout ideas. Good luck!
  • A good source of workouts is the National Training Center web site: ntcmastersswim.blogspot.com/ You can also check out "50 swim workouts" here: ruthkazez.com/50swimworkouts.html They are sorted by stroke etc. If you are short on time, these "lunchtime swim workouts" are good: ruthkazez.com/LunchSwims.html If you haven't already, study Ande's Swim faster Faster tips: U.S. Masters Swimming Discussion Forums - View Single Post - Ande's Swimming Tips: Swimming Faster Faster Good luck!
  • I disagree about the 50 and 100 free. Someone who can swim 26.5 50 free should be around 59 to 1:01 for 100 free. A lot of swimmers who can swim a low 26s 50 free can swim 58 seconds for the 100 free. I agree with you. Doubling your 50 time and adding 4-5 seconds is usually typical. Using TopTen times as a guideline, for the 2009 women's 50-54 age group it took a 26.70 for tenth place in the 50 and a 58.83 in the 100.

Your 50 free and 100 free times are unusual. Most people who swim a 26.5 50 free will swim a 1:03 or 1:04 100 free. This suggests your 50 free is too slow or your 100 free time is too fast. Also your 100 fly is slow relative to your 50 fly. I would guess that most who swim a 32 50 fly will swim a 1:12-1:15 100.

I can relate to these numbers, in yards I swim a 50 free in 25.50 and a 100 free in 56.40. Seems to me his/her 100 might be a tad slow given the time in the 50.

There are others who are much better suited to giving you advice but I have a few tips. Swim slowly and try to maximize your distance per stroke. Try to swim 250-300 yards a week at your 50m or 100m race pace. You will need lots of rest. To improve your fly do a lot of freestyle, a lot of fly drill, and some full stoke fly with lots of rest. Don't try to swim fly when you can't maintain form. Improve your dolphin and flutter kick so you can kick hard for the whole race. If you have time read through the entire swim faster faster thread linked above. Good luck.
