YouTube - 50m Free Carlisle 16/5/09I swam 2 massive P.B.s at a meet last weekend.
Went 25.38 in 50m SCM Free (from 26.03)
and 56.38(26.78) in 100m SCM Free (from 58.75) :applaud:
The following video is of my 50 swim and I would appreciate some constructive critisism please. (Lane 4)
My start and underwater was good (5sdk) went 13 strokes out, 17 strokes back. Only 1sdk on my turn (and I was actually thinking "oh no, what will Ande think of that!?) Breathed 1 out 2 back. I still feel my stroke is slow. I have really been trying to increase my turnover, working on the straight arm catch we are all talking about now.

I look forward to your comments.
You look extremely powerful. For a 50 I'd work on increasing your turnover rate.
Yes, you could improve your start by making sure the first movement of your hands is forward. You seem to pull back slightly wth your hands before going forward with them.
Great swim, though!
P.S. reaction times are measured as the time between when the start is signalled (i.e., the beep or flash) and when your feet leave the blocks.

Why did I (sprinter) have to learn this from a national champion distance guy?:lmao:
The swim looked great! The obvious things that could be improved are the turnover and leaning back on the blocks, although I think some elite lean back and do pretty well.
Once you got moving forward on the start, the Sullivan-esque butterfly stroke in the air looks like it provided good momentum. If you're doing that on purpose, I'd exagerate it a little more to get more swing in your arms. If it's by accident or you don't notice yourself doing it, I'd be conscious not to do it as you're probably not getting any momentum out of it. Your kick is very strong- great swim!
I am doing a track start. I'm suprised you say I'm slow off the block, I actually think my start is the best part of my race. On the occasion that I've swam in a pool where they show reaction times I've been between 0.78 - 0.85 secs - which I don't think is too bad.
My stroke definately stalls when I breathe, and I definately tie up towards the end - You should see the last 15m of the 100!
Thanks for the comments guys. Keep them coming.:)

I don't think you're slow getting off probably not as fast as you can be though. In a 50 that is already pretty fast you're going to have to grab every tenth from anywhere you can get it.
I don't know how reaction time is measured. Is it the time it takes to actually react (first slight movement) to the start or the time from the start until the weight is removed from the block? I honestly don't know. If it is the former then a quick reaction time doesn't necessarily mean you are getting off the blocks quickly. If it is the latter then .8 is pretty good. The best are around .6-.7 I think.
You lean back at the start and it looks like you are putting your arms in tension. I think this is hurting you in getting off quickly. I think you can work on your start.
Your swim looked awesome. Nailed the trun.
Could be the angle, but it looked like your entry was a bit flat. I also think it looks like you pick your head up too much to breathe.
But as was said, great kick, nice turn and try to get the turn-over going.
Overall it looked pretty good. Your stroke looked to fall apart a lot in the last 10-15m because you seem to be loping a lot more which is not what you are looking for.
I would suggest getting fatigued during a practice and trying to hold good form because then that way you would be able to hold it during your 50 to make it even faster.
you have a great stroke, but not a sprinter's stroke. You sure as heck have a sprinters kick though. About the swim:
you take a longtime to get off the block. It is because you pull back and because you are not doing a track start. I have that problem too, but I do not have the time to learn a track start. Oh well. If you have the time, though, learning a track start ( particularily considering how slow you are off the block) will probably take more than a .25 off your time.
Also you breath too much. But you probably know that.
If you trained for it, you could go under 2:00 in the 200 M. I am sure of it
It appears to me that you are doing a track start, its difficult to see though. If you are doing a track start (which you should be doing) then try leaning forward a little so you have equal weight on both the front and back foot. It takes some getting used to because it feels like you aren't getting any jump from the back foot. So, some people prefer the sling shot approach. Most swimmers, though, get equal weight on the front and back foot and don't lean back.
I don't think you are breathing too much, though you could get rid of that final breath. What I do notice is a slight pause in your stroke when you breathe. I do this to and so does Jason Lezak I think. Try to make your breathe a little more "sneaky" keep one goggle in the water and reach/roll forward with the top of your head to get the breath. You may be picking up your head to breathe too much. In practice try looking at the side of the pool under the lane lines when you breathe. Roll forward for your breathe.
Your turn over is a bit slow for a 50. Try to increase your turnover by increasing the speed of your recovery, i.e., how quickly you get your hand from exit to entry.
I don't know what was going on with your arms on the dive. The best method maybe to hit a tight line right from the jump rather than doing the Phelps thing with the arms. Starts have become very simple...track start immediately to a tight streamline into the water...very rigid body position.
That's a fast time though. It actually looks pretty good to me. The 50 is hard to improve. Good luck.
