University of Washington Cutting Swimming

University of Washington is cutting both their men's and women's swimming programs. I hope that the people who do their Masters training there aren't affected. Usually, it's the men's program that gets cut. But, here, they cut both of the swimming programs. www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/.../21029.asp
  • I have no problem with that. Football's revenue supports the entire athletic dept. at most D1 schools. (bless Pete Carroll) This statement is actually totally wrong. Most football and basketball programs run a deficit. There are very few that turn a profit or break even. Now, if you are referring to revenue stream, you might be correct. I'm not saying sports should turn a profit or break even, they are part of the collegiate experience but eliminating a swimming program by claiming it doesn't generate revenue like football or basketball is a red herring.

Most do run deficits - only the rare few don't, and between scholarships, trtavel, coaches they are in the red. Sports in college should be just like high school -part of the whole package. They just scuttled a great life experience for 30 or 40 kids, at a time when most of them need the discipline and interaction of a quality team sport. They certainly will take all the tuition and fees though.
  • I hope that the people who do their Masters training there aren't affected. We will be. At the very least we'll be looking for new coaches since the UW assistants coach our masters team. Without the college team I strongly suspect the masters team is kaput, too. This really sucks and I hope the UW team can be saved, a la ASU. Whitney Hite and the other coaches really have put both teams on the map over the last couple seasons. I'm pretty much blindsided by this move. No question football rules the roost at Washington. Despite having a terrible team for the last few seasons they've been trying to get money to fund a $300 million upgrade to the stadium, yet the swim team continues (or did, anyway) to use a six lane pool built in the 1930s.
  • Revenue, expenses, etc. for every NCAA school can be found here:http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/ Holy cow, the nirvana of sport's figures. I could get obsessed by this site. Of note - it does not appear to include facility expenses and may only include game day expenses. Did you notice that it costs $46K per football participant and $8K per swimming participant? And, football expenses are 3 times all other sports combined (excluding basketball)? A few schools I looked at showed that expenses for football were the exact same amount as revenue, which of course is not remotely possible to be to the penny. Fishy accounting. This is a great website and shows exactly how out of whack things are.

Hopefully, you guys will still be able to rent out the pool or something. Or, would they close the pool down as well.
  • Hopefully, you guys will still be able to rent out the pool or something. Or, would they close the pool down as well. Big problem here is going to be insurance. Unless the Masters team has it's own insurance policy and includes the school, the school will deny them. The USMS policy will not be sufficient.
  • Not sure if they will close the pool or not. The pool is used by several other groups such as water polo, but they could certainly save money by closing the pool, too. The university doesn't seem real anxious to rent out their facilities to non-university related groups, so I'm doubtful we'd get to use it.
  • Revenue, expenses, etc. for every NCAA school can be found here:http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/ Look at the attached data I downloaded. In 2007, the Washington football program generated $37,092,611 in total revenue and had $17,202,549 in total expenses. Washington State, a comparably miserable program right now had $13,469,260 in total football revenue with $8,274,189 in total football expenses. Bottom line that's a healthy profit from both. Then why are they cutting swimming??? It can't be a revenue issue, it seems pretty cost efficient to me. Are they cutting golf or softball or tennis?? Do the expenses also include the cost of facilities? or the cost of scholarships
