University of Washington Cutting Swimming

University of Washington is cutting both their men's and women's swimming programs. I hope that the people who do their Masters training there aren't affected. Usually, it's the men's program that gets cut. But, here, they cut both of the swimming programs. www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/.../21029.asp

99 on the football roster, go figure. www.gohuskies.com/.../wash-m-footbl-mtt.html I have no problem with that. Football's revenue supports the entire athletic dept. at most D1 schools. (bless Pete Carroll)
  • So, we should send a nice note to the wonderful AD at Washington State for not giving a crap about the swim program. I know it won't happen, but I would love to see an AD drop a football team instead. QUOTE] Careful Wookie! Washington State is not to be confused with Washington. Maybe you have to be from the state of Washington to be so sensitive to it... Anyway, as a former Washington State swimmer, I have no love for Husky swimmers, but I am sad to see another Pac-10 swim program disappear (2 actually, I guess if you count men and women separately). Wazzu has no men's program, Oregon has no swimming, and now Washington won't either... so sad...

This statement is actually totally wrong. Most football and basketball programs run a deficit. There are very few that turn a profit or break even. Now, if you are referring to revenue stream, you might be correct. I'm not saying sports should turn a profit or break even, they are part of the collegiate experience but eliminating a swimming program by claiming it doesn't generate revenue like football or basketball is a red herring. Revenue, expenses, etc. for every NCAA school can be found here:http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/ Look at the attached data I downloaded. In 2007, the Washington football program generated $37,092,611 in total revenue and had $17,202,549 in total expenses. Washington State, a comparably miserable program right now had $13,469,260 in total football revenue with $8,274,189 in total football expenses. Bottom line that's a healthy profit from both.

Instead of cutting teams, why not pay the football/basketball coaches salaries that are more reasonable instead of these multi-million dollar contracts.
  • Not sure if they will close the pool or not. The pool is used by several other groups such as water polo, but they could certainly save money by closing the pool, too. The university doesn't seem real anxious to rent out their facilities to non-university related groups, so I'm doubtful we'd get to use it. You mean some age group club hasn't offered to rent time at the pool yet. In my area, an age group club that needed to rent space, would be on UW like a hungry pack of wolves.

Just got email that today practice at UW pool canceled. I guess, i will swim somewhere until Nats, then see what happens next. Sad!
  • The size of the teams was very very small --- 19 men and 15 women. The current coach has reduced team size to a max of 18 on each side (OK, I guess he found room for one extra on the men's side). I believe the thinking was that three per lane was all they could effectively support with the six-lane pool.
  • Very sad. How many colleges or universities are there in Washington that have a swim team?

Just checked out their website - just curious. The size of the teams was very very small --- 19 men and 15 women. Also, the usual small group of foreign swimmers -- not sure how many were on scholarship. Pac 10 is now the Pac 5 for men's swimming ... or 4 1/2 depending on ASU

Men's college swimming is regrettably in a death spiral. The fewer schools fielding a team, the easier it will be to cut the next one(s). With the Pac-10 down to the Pac-5, who will be next to go? I think even teams with adequate endowments are in danger...
