University of Washington Cutting Swimming

University of Washington is cutting both their men's and women's swimming programs. I hope that the people who do their Masters training there aren't affected. Usually, it's the men's program that gets cut. But, here, they cut both of the swimming programs. www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/.../21029.asp

  • This statement is actually totally wrong. Most football and basketball programs run a deficit. There are very few that turn a profit or break even. Now, if you are referring to revenue stream, you might be correct. I'm not saying sports should turn a profit or break even, they are part of the collegiate experience but eliminating a swimming program by claiming it doesn't generate revenue like football or basketball is a red herring. Most do run deficits - only the rare few don't, and between scholarships, trtavel, coaches they are in the red. Sports in college should be just like high school -part of the whole package. They just scuttled a great life experience for 30 or 40 kids, at a time when most of them need the discipline and interaction of a quality team sport. They certainly will take all the tuition and fees though.
