I swim for excercising my back after a surgery. I would like to make my work out a little harder and I am considering getting zoomers. I am not a strong competitive swimmer. Can you help decide between sillicone and rubber zoom fins? What are pluses and minuses of each?

What kind of back surgery did you have? Are you working with a PT?
I had an L4-L5 laminectomy/discectomy and water exercise was a great part of my recovery but I didn't know how to swim at the time. What type of swimming do you plan to do?
Since I've learned to swim I 've used the blue zoomers and I like them alot. I would really recommend avoiding kickboards, though in favor of swimming in a good streamline.

I definitely would suggest investing in the Zoomer Z2's. I swam in college but have not been near as tough on my body during my workouts over the past 4 years. Bought the z2s a couple of years ago and they are great. The red and blue zoomers are more for intense athletes, as opposed to the z2s which are longer and for training over extended periods of time. Hope that helps!

Hi jkadash
Sorry to hear about your surgery, I had L5-S1 laminectomy/discectomy, and now have Cauda Equina Syndrome. I can't say which fins would be best for you, I suggest it would be a personal choice (i.e. whatever works best), but I found Zoomers pretty good. Start using them very sparingly, it is very easy to do too much and pay later. As Willow suggests, I would avoid kickboards, concentrating on streamline will give you a better swimming position also, using a kickboard may put extra pressure/stress on the joints/muscles above your lumbar spine as they try to compensate for any lack of mobility/flexibility or strength.
Good luck:cane:

How long after your back surgery? I would suggest (and this is only my opinion) that you talk with your doctor/physical therapist prior to adding the zoomers to your workout...All the best, and I hope you are recovering well!

My surgery was L5-S1 laminectomy/discectomy.
Great to hear you found zoomers helpful!
What kind do you have? When I searched on line to see what to get i see . I see Zoomers by Zoomer, Zoomers by Finis, and I also see sillicone zoomers.
I concern about getting the right fit. I wear 7.5 shoes, and wonder if I should get 6-8 (D), or 8-9.5(E) as I see references to them being a very tight fit and that people should get 1 size larger.

My surgery was 2 years ago. My back feels a lot better since I began swimming 6 months ago.

Come to think of it I think my surgery was L5-S1 too. It was 16 years ago.
I believe I have the plain old Zoomers by Zoomer. I didn't know there were so many makers of Zoomers! I just tried them on until they felt right and bought that size. They have never fallen off and I don't get blisters, so they must be the right fit.
