Two caps

Pure speculation department: I never liked those silicone caps. I never felt like they stayed on my head very well--too slippery. That's not a problem with the latex caps, which are sticky. I wonder if by putting on a latex cap first and then the silicone cap, the silicone cap would stay on better. Just a thought...

Open water swimmers often use two for extra warmth. The scalp has a lot of blood vessels and can lose a lot of heat. Silicone is better than latex for this purpose.

Most that do like the goggles under a cap - having two helps keep the goggles in place and the goggles don't pull on your hair.

The Silicone Aqua-V over latex is more buoyant with less drag than either one alone. The swimmers wear 2 to go faster. Similar to wearing a LZR over a BlueSeventy.

I generally have major issues with swim caps - I find them very uncomfortable and they seem to make my head feel hot (don't wear any hats for that matter). For masters swimming I just keep my hair at a short cut. I think I only noticed about 2-3 guys in the Olympic Trials final rounds doing the "bic" head shave style - it is rather ugly on most. Anybody else out there have any opinions in the "shaved head" vs cap debate (and I would assume this mainly applies to males!)

So I'm assuming since people were doing this at trials that it's legal to wear two caps at a masters meet right? Although I wouldn't really want to, one is bad enough. I was wondering at trials if it had to do with tv and logos and all. Phelps would wear his "CW" cap in prelims but put another cap on top for semis and finals. I thought it might have been that the "CW" was too distracting and nbc (or speedo or someone) requested him to wear a solid cap or something. The cap he put on top looked like just a regular cap to me so I thought it odd that if he was wearing two for speed reasons that he'd not put the "CW" on top of the other.

I can get hot in a matter of minutes, so I don't wear one even for 50s. I find that longer hair is a cooler head, though. I tried the clippered 1/4 inch hair bumpy head thing and I was so hot that year I decided to try going the other way. I have never been so comfortable swimming now that it is shoulder length. It allows me to train much harder and deal with much hotter temperatures than ever before.... in and out of the pool. No caps ever!

Al is the hairiest man (or woman--you know who you are) in all of swimming. Intuitively it would seem you would not only be cooler with less hair, but swim faster without that 2 lb. mop on your head. Can't argue with results though--so continue to rock that "Sampson-like" coifed "do." Unfortunately, we will not be able to stand as witness to it's maximum magical cooling effects as I think Phoenix is in for a "cold spell" and it will be under 110 degrees for the state meet this weekend.
