You bet! It's like covering the radiator of a car in the summer. I can get hot in a matter of minutes, so I don't wear one even for 50s.
I find that longer hair is a cooler head, though. I tried the clippered 1/4 inch hair bumpy head thing and I was so hot that year I decided to try going the other way. I have never been so comfortable swimming now that it is shoulder length. It allows me to train much harder and deal with much hotter temperatures than ever before.... in and out of the pool. No caps ever!
