Seed Time

I am looking for some guidance on entering a seed time for the 500 Free. I have never swum the event in competition and do not want to be too far off from what it should be. I know this might not be enough information, but I just want to have a rough, conservative idea: Best Times: 100 yd Free 1:02 (29/33) 200 yd Free 2:27 (33/37/39/38) I don't even have a practice time, but I can tell you I tend to be a little better at shorter distances in practice than longer distances. Any help would be appreciated.
  • Well there is always the NT (no time) option, but if you want the enter a time I’d guess 6:32.47. Would you mind sharing how you came up with that time? When I first started masters and did meets regularly, I asked my coach at the time (Ron Johnson) this question. He had me get on the blocks and do a 50 scy free right then (at the end of practice). After he got my time, he gave me times for all the events I wanted (50, 100, 200, 500 fr, 50, 100, 200 br), and he was extremely close on all of them.
  • What meet is it? I'm in CT so wondering if it's one I can make. NE Masters SCY Championships at Harvard: 3/27-3/30 Info is at the following link: www.meetresults.com/.../
  • Would you mind sharing how you came up with that time?Tim, I pulled the time out of the blue water. As you point out your coach after seeing you swim and knowing your swimming ability, can pretty accurately estimate how you will swim in meets. Sight unseen, one number is as good as any other. What I did was, I took Brad’s slowest 50 split (+ 1 second) in the 200 and extrapolated it for 500, then I added 2.47 seconds to make it look like a legitimate seed time.
  • Rob..can I get you to come up with seed times instead of using the converters? This might be a new career path for me… professional seed time estimation. Until I get this off the ground, her are a few basic rules of seed time fabrication: 1) Times that end in .00 are bad, 0.00 is worse and 00.00 shows a total lack of originality (e.g. 3:00.00 in the 200 IM, how boring) 2) Palindromes are good – 2:59.52 in the 200 IM is good 3) Birthdays are good (assuming you are lucky enough to have one that works) – e.g February 12, 1973 could be a great birthday seedtime 2:12.73 4) Prime numbers for hundredths are good 5) Lottery numbers can be used – Georgia’s Fantasy 5 numbers of 5-11-19 could be used by Paul Smith for his 500 free seed time. More advanced seed time fabrications, such as multi-event fabrications and full season fabrications will be offered as a premium service.

...then I added 2.47 seconds to make it look like a legitimate seed time. I'm going to remember this for my own use.... "Rob's 2.47 Second Rule" :lmao:

  • What speed do you hold your 100 repeats on? Well, I train in short course meters and typically I finish at 1:40 and rest 20 secs.

You're a tad faster than me and your splits fall like mine too. I go about 7:30 in practice--in a race I think I'd do better.... My speed drops significantly though and I don't train for 500's. What speed do you hold your 100 repeats on? Your 200 shows you drop off a bit like me. I think 7:00 should be doable for you. Failing that, go for swim, warm up, push it for 500 and see where you stand.
