Pre and Post swim skin lotion / shower gel

Hi - I'm new to swimming. Can anyone recommend a post swim skin lotion and / or shower gel brand that both helps remove chlorine and helps with dry skin? Also - I saw someone using a pre-swim lotion that is supposed to help fend off the chlorine, but I wasn't quick enough to ask him what it was. General google searches haven't yielded any results. Anyone know what this is and where to get it? Thanks very much.

Thanks for the attitude. I smell like chlorine until I take a shower, but I'm nice and pretty after. My girlfriend has a sensitive nose, and she's never said anything. Either she's mysteriously being nice about it--and I don't know why she'd refrain from telling me I smell like chlorine, but not when my breath makes her want to vomit after I eat a banana--or she doesn't smell it, along with everyone else I'm around. I don't think she intended to sound like she had attitute...relax a little. Its gonna vary from pool to pool as well...chemicals used, amounts of chemicals, length of workouts, how often you workout, etc. I only swim MWF and sometimes Saturday (Chlorine Pool, 90 minute workouts) and I smell like a pool if I sweat or lick my skin....take it FWIW. Also I'm bald (shave my head) so no "hair issues" whatsoever! :D

I'm perfectly relaxed. I just don't like it when people assume I'm a liar or just wrong.
  • ...I literally just licked my skin after walking 10 minutes in the sun in a black t-shirt and jeans, and nothing. So, I guess my skin or the two pools I swim in are different than yours... maybe your pools don't use chlorine??? either that or you haven't been swimming as long as the rest of us and haven't built up the "residual chlorine smell" yet... if they are chlorine, give it time- you'll eventually smell like it no matter how hard you try to get rid of it...
  • ...It might just take time to accumulate enough of that junk to start smelling perpetually. If they could find a way to convert it to energy, swimmers could power the planet. hehehe. seriously! :laugh2:

No, they definitely use chlorine. We have to do all that testing crap that comes with it. I don't know how to do it, but I've heard them talking about it a few times. You might be right though. For hair I use Nexxus Aloe Rid once a week. I also like the Nexxus Humectress conditioner and the Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm. Supposedly if you get your hair wet before you get in the pool it will keep it from absorbing as much chlorine, but who wants to do all that? www.nexxus.com/.../shampoo_aloe-rid_gentle_clarifying.html www.nexxus.com/.../favorite_humectress_moisturizing_conditioner.html www.drugstore.com/.../conditioning_balm.htm As for skin, I eventually build up an immunity to moisturizers, but I have been enjoying a good run with Eucerin Calming Cream, "for relief of skin so dry it itches." www.eucerinus.com/.../hb_calming.html My husband says I smell like chlorine, and my kids say my car smells like "the pool." Personally, I don't even notice it anymore. At least I don't leave a ring in the bathtub! :joker:

Yeah, the swimsuits smell. I have to wash them, but that probably won't help much, huh?
  • Kiehls has an outstanding product for removing chlorine. It's a company from NY since 1831. Many of the women on my team use it and it works! You can smell your arm during the day and it smells like your lotion not eau de chlorine. There's and All-Sport Swimmer's Cleansing Rinse for Hair and Body with the tag line Neutralizes Chlorine that we mix half and half with one of their regular bath soaps (currently I'm using lavender, but they have all kinds of flavors). This makes it last longer. They also have an All-Sport Every Day Shampoo, and Hair Conditioner and Grooming Aid. These products are also excellent. They are not sold in Walgreens or Rite-Aid. I get them at Nordstroms here but the web site is www.kielhs.com. As for lotion, I use Nivea and it works well. Good luck! These are tried and true products but they aren't cheap. Nancy
