Hi there, first time posting, just found out about this wonderful forum. I learned about French girl Laure Manaudou using a 2 beat kick to swim 400m. But the clip on youtube is too fast i couldn't figurt out which leg kicks goes with which stroking arm. Does anybody know? Is it the opposite leg kick with the stroking arm? Or is it the same side? Thanks.

2 beat kicks work in sync with the arms in most cases. It adds both leverage and balance to the stroke. As the left arm enters...the right foot thumps with a down beat. Right arm enters...the left foot thumps down. Laure has a very pronounced two beat kick ...www.youtube.com/watch You can see it clearly towards the end of this clip. When she switches gears though...the kick tempo changes to 6 beats, and her arms develop more turnover. Really incredible swimmer. PS...welcome to the forum.

I actually think you did the right think by accident :-) I watched Manaudou's video more carefuly this time, i think you're supposed to do a kick and arm stroke on the same side, not the opposite. Opposite side works best for me. It's just like walking, when you put one leg and opposite arm forward for balance. Here's a demonstration (me) slowed down 50%. You shouldn't emulate anything I do except the 2-beat kick if that's what you want to do. video.google.com/videoplay

Really well done. This link on goswim.tv explains the sequence thoroughly. It's a very helpful web-site which I pass along to many of the curious age group swimmers at our pool. www.goswim.tv/drilloftheweek_comments.php

Ok, last night during my workout I was attempting to do a 2 beat kick, but it seems that instead of kicking with the opposite leg when my hand entered the water, I was kicking with the leg on the same side. :( How do I correct this? Are there some drills that I can do to correct my timing? Help!!!

Give me that old six beat thing over the 2 beat kick anytime.

It's happening so fast that the timing is hard to notice. But take a look at these freeze frames. As each arm enters...the opposite foot comes down. Either way...by letting your legs dangle slightly, rather than kicking hard...the timing will come naturally.

Look at this animated clip made by the japanese. I think the woman illustrated in the film won a medal in the olympics for Japan. Anyhow the clips clearly shows the timing of the kicks. Great computer generated animation. The japanese are really something. www.youtube.com/watch

  • Just wanted to add that at the end of the clip it demonstrates 6, 4 and 2 beat kicks.Looking at want they call a 4-beat kick, it appears to be a 6-beat kick with a weak 3rd and 5th beat. It appears that her left hand enters as the right foot starts its downbeat and the right hand enters when the left foot starts its down beat. The only way to do this is with a 2 or 6 beat kick or by not kicking left-right-left-right…
