  • I wish the rules allowed swimmers to curl their toes over the edge I'd get a much better start This rule has been changed again. Now the toes can be out of the water but they cannot curl over the gutter or pool edge.
  • I wish the rules allowed swimmers to curl their toes over the edge I'd get a much better start I know what you mean. My feet almost always slip and I just fall back with a big splash.
  • I'd like the rule to be changed, but it exists because of consistency, some pools don't have gutters, there's just touch pads or a wall. FINA changed the rule years back, not sure when. Backstrokers could get a much better start by curling their toes over the edge but since some pools don't have gutters, the rule is there to level the playing field. ande I don't see any reason to change that rule. Most of the rule changes lately have been from things that were difficult to judge, such as allowing a single dolphin kick on the *** pullout, or allowing you to roll onto your stomach on a backstroke turn. The backstroke start rules are very clear-cut already. The start judge just needs to ensure everyone is facing the wall with their toes not showing above the surface of the water.
  • Backstrokers could get a much better start by curling their toes over the edge but since some pools don't have gutters, the rule is there to level the playing field. Not to mention people used to exploit the rule by using "standup starts" where you basically stood on the edge of the gutter and held on to the top of the block. Those starts were great. Imagine the SDK you could get off one of those!

Imagine the SDK you could get off one of those! only if you didn't smack the crap out of your back on the start! when i was in high school, stand up starts were still legal, and let's just say that while trying to learn them, a t-shirt over your suit was a very good idea. and they never did work for me. :notworking: yay for gutter starts! ;)

No, can't use a forward start in competition. You must start in the water, facing the wall with your toes below the surface. how long before that rule is changed?

I don't see any reason to change that rule. Just pondering out loud. Esecially after watching Ande's entry in his "SDK on your back Special"

Imagine the SDK you could get off one of those! i used to use those "back in the day", and pity the fool who was doing a standard backstroke start next to me. thats one rule change I wish they left alone.
