video of me doing a 50 bk with underwater SDK footage on youtube

here's a video of me doing an easy speed 50 bk with underwater SDK footage filmed by my buddy Tyler Blessing youtube.com/watch ande
  • Unlike me, you clearly do not need a monofin. Rather, I need the ability to flex my nose and close it so I'm not constantly exhaling. What'd you do? Only 11-12 SDKs off the walls? I see a blazing 200 back in your future. How many SDKs are you planning for your 50, 100, 200 at LC Nats? (I think you said 6 off the turns in your 200? If it's long course, shouldn't you do more?) Now, that you're such an expert SDK-er on your back, are you going to ditch backstroke when the short course season arrives? Your ADD seems to lead you to change events each and every season. At least I know you won't be doing any evilstroke.

You're getting a lot of speed on your SDK's.

Nice Ande - Your SDKs are to die for. I still can't figure out how to be able to pinch my nose closed so that I don't run out of air without getting water up my nose.

Great form Andy great u w kicking. I checked it on Dart Swim.
  • If yo uare worried about the nasal flush during a long underwater dolphin, try a nose plug. It made me relax about it and really extend my underwater work. Its one less thing to think about.
  • Is there a rule that limits to the number of underwater kicks you can take and/or the distance (in yards or meters) you can be underwater before surfacing for backstroke?
  • Is there a rule that limits to the number of underwater kicks you can take and/or the distance (in yards or meters) you can be underwater before surfacing for backstroke? Yes, your head must break the surface by the 15 meter mark. Most pools have a different colored float on the lane lines at 15 meters to denote this. There is no limit on the number of kicks you can take.

There is no limit on the number of kicks you can take. So the kicks don't have to be the typical backstroke (flutter) kick? If fly kick on your back is allowed, would *** (or any other) kick on your back also be allowed, as long as you surface by the 15 meter mark? I guess I'm more of a traditionalist. If I'm doing backstroke, I tend to limit myself to doing only backstroke, and not fly. But if I can do *** kicks, I may play around.
  • So the kicks don't have to be the typical backstroke (flutter) kick? correct, many swimmers are faster at streamlined dolphin kick SDK than they are at 1) swimming backstroke and 2) streamlined flutter kick. Fast kickers tend to kick as far as they legally and sensibly can in events. The trade off is you can't breathe till you surface. Swimmers can be very aggressive in 50's and 100's Swimmers need to use some caution in the 200 bk, fr, & IM and the 400 IM and the 500 free Taking too many SDK's in longer events can be detrimental Many freestylers take 2 - 10 SDK's off each wall would *** (or any other) kick on your back also be allowed yes but *** kick is much slower for most swimmers because they break streamline. here's some SDK footage: Ian Crocker 100 fly 2007 worlds www.youtube.com/watch Piersol 100 back 2007 worlds www.youtube.com/watch Ryan Lochte 100 SCM back49.99 youtube.com/watch So the kicks don't have to be the typical backstroke (flutter) kick? • Yeah, if you look at the actual rules for backstroke about the only requirement is you remain on your back at all times (other than the last stroke into a turn). There are no stipulations on the type of kick or arm pull that can be used.
