I still wish toe curling was leagal for backstroke starts
I remember watching people do stand-up backstroke starts during my brief age group career (1987-89) and thanking, "Man, I'm glad I'm not a backstroker!"
I do miss not being able to curl the toes over, though. I always wondered why they changed that rule. Ande's comment makes sense.

Ande, it's the same problem for me as other people, I need to exhale slowly out my nose when on my back, which limits my distance. I feel like I'm developing some strengths on underwater dolphin kicks in the past few months but I'm limited by my habit of exhaling.

I'll give it a try. I'm entered in the 50 back at the arizona meet this weekend so I'll try it with a noseclip, and try to maximize the distance on the start and turn. I figure it can only speed me up, since backstroke is my worst stroke. I haven't done a backstroke start in 20 years or more, I'll have to work on that during the meet warm up (no blocks at my pool)!
