Not to mention people used to exploit the rule by using "standup starts" where you basically stood on the edge of the gutter and held on to the top of the block. Those starts were great. Imagine the SDK you could get off one of those!
i used to use those "back in the day", and pity the fool who was doing a standard backstroke start next to me. thats one rule change I wish they left alone.
