i have been reading a lot of the posts herein.... and it has occurred to me... (and this will surely betray my newbie-ness) there are an awful lot of abbreviations and terms used that leave me essentially having no clue what was said.... is there a book out there someplace "swimese for dummies" or the like? i speak several languages, sadly swimese is not yet among them.....
i can swim two miles comfortably, and have energy left over after to go run three miles... but decode the posts on this board?....
any reference/resource suggestions gladly accepted...
thanks.

jim

hmmm.... if WD is warm down... would CU be cool up?
isn't activity specific language a wonderful thing? even after translating the abbreviations, one is left wondering.... "cool... what does THAT mean?"
saw a post that said 2 x 600 on 11:00.... dug around and got it translated ( i think ) and dang near died laughing... it takes me 12:00 to go 600..... so does that mean my RI is -1:00....

Yaeh I agree that WU and WD seem to be self contradicting terms....Seems like WU and CD make more sense (that beeing WU for Warm up and CD for Cool down)...its kind of like the drive on a parkway...but park on a driveway thing I guess....just created to twist our minds in a knot maybe...LOL!! As far as the negative RI goes, I think we can all relate to that after reading Ande's Swimming Blog...LOL!!

... and I think I need a swimming math lesson ... seriously, when I first started, coach would start talking about 300 this and 100 that and I would panic - ARGH! What is 300 divided by 25? times two? That would be how many laps/back-n-forths ... by then he was well down the list of things to do.
Here's a term that will stump if you are a beginner: swim means freestyle/stroke means anything other than freestyle! (Am I right on this?)
The yardage thing is not all that hard. 4 X 25 = 100, so a 300 would be 4 X 3 = 12 laps. It just takes getting used to. When they tell you to swim Freestyle, they usually mean Freestyle, or as the SwimStud would say, 'Front Crawl'. My coach says stroke of choice when we can swim what we want. Have fun, the learning the terms will come with time. The coach will probably not mind 'translating' for you until you get the hang of it.
How are you doing with all this, jiminos? I didn't realize we were as cool and inscrutable as those skateboard kids I see on the T (Boston subway), talking about their stunts. Are you aware there's about to be a movie coming out (set I think in Philadelphia) about an inner-city swim team? Swimming's where it's at! (Though not doing so well with my love affair, the 400 IM. We may have to break up after this next meet.)
When someone says the 2fly- they mean the 200 fly. (can be used for other strokes too)
If you don't understand what the coach says, ask him/her to explain it. Most coaches don't mind and will probably take you under their wing and be honored to teach you about their favorite sport! Masters swimmers are pretty eager to help each other too. We're all very passionate about our sport and want everyone to love it like we do!
not totally sure but i think FL is butterfly and BF is butterfrog
also,
EVF=early vertical forearm and my favorite RLSLTVF=rather later slightly less than vertical forearm
FR-freestyle
BK-backstroke
BR-breaststroke (and the best stroke...don't let anyone tell you otherwise)
IM-Individual Medley (butterfly, bk, br, fr)
SCY- short course yards (25 yds)
SCM-short course meters (25 metres)
SPL- strokes per length (how many strokes you take in a length)
SL- stroke length (I think)
SR-stroke rate (I think, but it'd be how fast you stroke)
PR-personal record
PB-personal best
RI-rest interval (how long you rest in between sets)
Don't know about BF...best friend, boyfriend.....but probably not :laugh2:....it's probably butterfly, but I'm not totally sure...

Wow....I was totally thinking of those abbreviations from Terry's last posting when I made my last posting on this thread but I couldn't quite remember what EVF stood for....both terms refer to getting the forearms into a close to vertical postion (so perpendicular to the torso) shortly after the hands enter the water during freestyle ...(so its like using your entire forearm as a giant swim paddle or like an oar for a row boat to catch as much water as possible during the catch phase of the stroke)....Terry mentioned that both Ion Thorpe and Grant Hackett utilize this technique. I also believe EVT is part of the general style of freestyle know as "FQS" ...or "Front Quadrant Swimming"....but I'm not 100% sure about that...(maybe its part of a particular variation of FQS actually that both Thorpe and Hackett use?)

How about listing some of them and then people will fill us all in.
"SDKs" was stumping me: I think I figured out it means "short dolphin kicks," usually what you would use underwater for transitions/speed when legal.
What's got you stumped?
You are very close Isobel....but I think it actually means "Streamlined Dolphin Kicks" which is done underwater as you pointed out ....off of the dive and the turns of all non-breaststroke events....(well unless your Kitajima that is....LOL!!:joker: )

SR also stands for swimming Related on this forum as Kyra points out in an earlier post on this same thread.....(So some of these abreviations can mean different things depending on the context that they are used in)
