i have been reading a lot of the posts herein.... and it has occurred to me... (and this will surely betray my newbie-ness) there are an awful lot of abbreviations and terms used that leave me essentially having no clue what was said.... is there a book out there someplace "swimese for dummies" or the like? i speak several languages, sadly swimese is not yet among them..... i can swim two miles comfortably, and have energy left over after to go run three miles... but decode the posts on this board?.... any reference/resource suggestions gladly accepted... thanks. be, jim
  • How about listing some of them and then people will fill us all in. "SDKs" was stumping me: I think I figured out it means "short dolphin kicks," usually what you would use underwater for transitions/speed when legal. What's got you stumped?

NSR-not swimming related SR- swimming related SPL- strokes per length DPS- distance per stroke Those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head. Those ones seem to pop up a lot though...

i will start keeping a list to post here.... some that come to mind..... FR, 2BK, SCY, SCM, BR, BF, IM, SPL, SL, SR, PR, PB, and on and on... basically... it seems, any term for which swimmers use an abbreviation... it's like any other endeavor. any activity which has a lot of adherents also develops, over time, a unique sub-language. most adherents don't even realize they have learned another language... be, jim

FR-freestyle BK-backstroke BR-breaststroke (and the best stroke...don't let anyone tell you otherwise) IM-Individual Medley (butterfly, bk, br, fr) SCY- short course yards (25 yds) SCM-short course meters (25 metres) SPL- strokes per length (how many strokes you take in a length) SL- stroke length (I think) SR-stroke rate (I think, but it'd be how fast you stroke) PR-personal record PB-personal best RI-rest interval (how long you rest in between sets) Don't know about BF...best friend, boyfriend.....but probably not :laugh2:....it's probably butterfly, but I'm not totally sure...

wow! thanks for all the responses... it helps tremendously. i'd ask my coach.... but i don't have one! the closest team is 90 miles away.... out here, it seems the attitude is "swimming? nah, that's something the kids do in the summer." so... the language, the technique and the like.. all self taught. i've asked the local Y (only 25 miles away) if they've ever worked with USMS... the manager said no, and implied she wasn't inclined to because of the time commitment required and her staff already stretched... she said she'd consider it if it was volunteer coordinated.... anybody from around grays harbor washington? thanks again, be, jim

hmmm.... if WD is warm down... would CU be cool up? isn't activity specific language a wonderful thing? even after translating the abbreviations, one is left wondering.... "cool... what does THAT mean?" saw a post that said 2 x 600 on 11:00.... dug around and got it translated ( i think ) and dang near died laughing... it takes me 12:00 to go 600..... so does that mean my RI is -1:00.... be, jim
