i have been reading a lot of the posts herein.... and it has occurred to me... (and this will surely betray my newbie-ness) there are an awful lot of abbreviations and terms used that leave me essentially having no clue what was said.... is there a book out there someplace "swimese for dummies" or the like? i speak several languages, sadly swimese is not yet among them.....
i can swim two miles comfortably, and have energy left over after to go run three miles... but decode the posts on this board?....
any reference/resource suggestions gladly accepted...
thanks.
be,
jim
The one that gets me is that so many people use "Lap" and "Length" interchangeably. Isn't a Lap swimming up and back and Length just swimming from one wall to the next?:frustrated:
It matters to me because I swim in two pools one is 50m and the other is 25m.
Slowswim -
You are correct, the two phrases are often used incorrectly. A length is one wall to the other, a lap is out and back to the same starting position.
ABSU - Annoying British Suck Up (Not referring to you Ivor!!....An ABSU spends most of his time sucking up to as many of the female posters as possible to try and steal as many of these: :smooch: as he can).
Yes, this seems to be a sub-specialty of SS. :thhbbb: You're just as sweet, Jim-Bo. Plus, you are doing the king of strokes. Has to give you an edge.
What about:
EB: engine building
VS: vessel shaping
NO: night owl
AM: never should have been invented (must refer to what Donna said)
MMA: multi-tasking mommy alzheimers
MG: math geek
MOS: "meaning of swimming" (subject to GA)
UT: FlyQueen adorees
ABC: anything but chardonnay
PP: Cruise's purple prose
BF: bicker-fest (term invented by Cruise)
You are very close Isobel....but I think it actually means "Streamlined Dolphin Kicks" which is done underwater as you pointed out ....off of the dive and the turns of all non-breaststroke events....(well unless your Kitajima that is....LOL!!:joker: )

This acronym can vary...for my group if we see SDK or the coach says it, it means a set of Swim, then Drill, then Kick. I had seen the SDK on here in Ande's blog and he eventually explained it.
In my group we also use SKP, or Swim Kick Pull.
After a few months, you get the hang of it. Each group I've swam with seems to have its own terms, sometimes a coach has their own.

Terminology - a swimmer never made.

You all are cracking me up!!! Before I post my set, I am glad that the length vs. lap was clarified; I know it has bothered a lot of my swim friends over the years, and I prefer the term length, is doesn't sound as far to me but don't forget, I am older and sometimes suffer from SWD (salt water damage) to my brain!!!

DAW=Die at Wall
EPS=Early Pool Exit
FOB=First off blocks (or Fell Off Blocks depends)
LOB=Last Off Blocks
NOB=Not On Blocks
SLOB=Starts Late Off Blocks (better to be a SLOB than a LOB)
and for you Flyers out there: SFDKAB (Swim Fly Don't Know Any Better)
SOP=Stay On Pace
and a couple of real ones:
DQ=Disqualified (I always thought it was Dairy Queen) but got a DQ once.

Dana: :rofl: I'm sorry but this seems funny to me. Come up with an acronym for your accident.
Sandy the Swim Stud: No, not the coral reef no bathing suit story!!! Some idiot put me in a relay and made me swim breastroke (and I am not one of those, never, ever), and I was doing dolphin kick with it. They stopped me at the wall and handed me a piece of paper and made me get out. And this was at one of my Alma Maters: Santa Clara LC Swim Meet!!! I kept telling them I didn't swim breaststroke, didn't believe me until right then. Dang, big time embarrassment, but the girl that was going to do the fly on our relay was thankful because she said she didn't swim fly either, at least not a hundred meters of it!!! Comedy of errors!!! I think I may be more well known for all of my mistakes than records!!
