Okay, so we all like each other. Well, mostly. S-o-o-o, it does stand to reason that each and every one of has an outstanding DVD to recommend for me ( & the rest of the forums gang) to rent for viewing over the holidays: Two categories: 1.) Seasonal DVD that we must watch 2.) Non-seasonal any genre DVD that will make our holiday viewing. Thanking you in advance.
  • As for LOTR...you leave the furry footed halfings alone, and while we're at it, we don't need soppy love scenes and kissing wrecking perfectly good magic/fantasy movies... Look, Tolkien had no women in his books and they had to put some in the movies or piss off half of the US. And that's exactly what the contrived scenes between Arwen and Aragorn are: sappy. Yuck. I like the perfectly good action movie (I did just see Casino Royale and The Departed), but not the love/dreamy/evenstar-carrying stuff. Give me Eowyn disguised as a man wielding a sword anyday ... Can't you tell from my new avatar? A "falling out over Braveheart?!" Tell me it ain't so. We just discussed having curry and lager in London ... It's an action movie, not a historical period piece. And what, are you a British history buff in addition to loving Wilkie? I think Robert the Bruce ended up doing fairly well in reality. My understanding is that the depiction of Edward II was also likely accurate. OK, here's a good question for you, Mr. British Historian sitting in a hot tub making us all jealous: Did Richard III kill the two princes or not? Only about 10 books written on the subject... (I've read them all, so you can't BS me.) Remember Heny VIII? What's the slogan for his 6 wives? No googling! I happen to be a bit of British history buff, and don't even get me started on the Roman Republic/Empire. Everyone should rent the I Claudius series of videos! Derek Jacobi is awesome! P.S. As to swimming, Caped Dude is right. Swimming Upstream is good. Judy Davis is great. And there are a lot of old fashioned backstroke swimming scenes.

Liv was an OK elf. But there wasn't even a decent kiss in any of those movies! What about passion?! Plus, I just liked Eowyn better. I liked the second movie in the series best. There were too many endings in Return of the King. And I got really sick of the sappy hobbits. I also have in my permanent DVD library: Gladiator, Braveheart (yes, I know Mel Gibson is a bit of an ass, but I love seeing him kick Edward I's butt) and, on a less gruesome note, Love Actually. OK we're going to fall out if you intend to give credibility to Braveheart...that was mostly fiction. As for LOTR...you leave the furry footed halfings alone, and while we're at it, we don't need soppy love scenes and kissing wrecking perfectly good magic/fantasy movies... It's like in action films when they have 20 minutes to save the earth but still have time to make out...drives me nuts. :frustrated:
  • My first kitty was named Eowyn, My husband has read that book 11 times and reads it once a year, every year. He treasures his hardcopy and won't loan it to anyone and there are no bent corners; multiple bookmarkers. So I'd like to nominate my husband, Jim, for the title of: Lord of the Rings Island Style Then your husband out-geeks the Geek. See, Poolraat, I was right about Eowyn. She rocks. Sox said so. :thhbbb:
  • For all you fruitcakes (holiday reference) who actually think LOTR is some magic fairy dusted land, I suggest you go rent Clerks 2 immediately. I think you will find some dialogue in that movie that fairly accurately sums up the LOTR movies.
  • P.S. "Swimming Upstream" was a good movie. I agree. Excellent movie. Another DVD I saw recently that I enjoyed was "The Cuckoo." P.S. "A Fish Called Wanda" actually came out way back in the '80s. 1988 to be exact!
  • For all you fruitcakes (holiday reference) who actually think LOTR is some magic fairy dusted land, I suggest you go rent Clerks 2 immediately. I think you will find some dialogue in that movie that fairly accurately sums up the LOTR movies. Geek: I think Islandsox socked you. She told us in another thread that there was "only one fruitcake in the world." LOTR is great, "you know what I'm saying?" I hope you "know what I'm saying." Here's a great little 10 minute movie, not for the holidays of course: www.youtube.com/watch
  • Anything with Katherine Hepburn! She's classic! Another whose title I can't remember but Kate played an athlete who at first disliked her agent/coach, then they fell in love. But the title escapes me just now. I believe that was "Pat and Mike"
  • Christmas Vacation - the best Chrismtas movie ever Dazed and Confused - my favorite movie of all time LOTR - oh no! Please, I'm a geek, but not that big of one. And, I agree with Fortress, Home Alone still cracks me up.
  • Fortress AKA Oh wooden legged one, I'm not a history buff, but they tried to imply that William Wallace got the princess pregnant it was absolute rubbish. What has this to do with Robert the Bruce? Did Richard III kill the two princes or not? I think the jury is out on this one...my opinion--probably not. Remember Heny VIII? What's the slogan for his 6 wives? Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday...Sunday he went to play golf and then watched football. :applaud: (I've not heard this one...this must be something like conjunction junction) I do not believe that Keira Knightly has a wooden leg. Hey, where's your new avatar of the day? Uh, Robert the Bruce did make an appearance in Braveheart as I recall. And it was Bruce, not Wallace, who became King of Scotland and subsequently won Scottish independence at the Battle of Bannockburn. As to the pregnancy, well that was obviously fictional, but it made for a great movie scene when the lovely princess imparts the news to mean ole Edward I. I don't think Richard III did it either, but that is contrary to the belief of the majority of historians. Henry VIII's 6 wives: "Divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived." He must have disliked the first five because they couldn't swim. Poolraat will like this DVD rec: Running Brave.

Hey, I loved Braveheart, movie and book, but of course it was fictional; Mel Gibson is a short fella and Braveheart was over 6'2, so that makes it fictional right there. And the Swimmer, wasn't that Burt Lancaster and he swam all over town? Literally? Oh, and by the way for you name-droppers, my first kitty was named Eowyn, and my last kitty who passed in March, was named Leto. And we had a kitty inbetween them we named Frodo. My husband is a fanatic about this stuff. My husband has read that book 11 times and reads it once a year, every year. He treasures his hardcopy and won't loan it to anyone and there are no bent corners; multiple bookmarkers. So I'd like to nominate my husband, Jim, for the title of: Lord of the Rings Island Style Donna
