Why swim distance swim workouts???

I can understand swimming crawl distance workouts but why swim distance backstroke, butterfly or breaststroke? How many events are there that are over 200m for fly, breaststroke or backstroke. To swim anything but max speed for workouts for these strokes is not worth the effort. Butterfrog???
  • Hey, what about that Canadian woman who only swims open water doing butterfly? She'd need this training for sure, but it is unlikely anyone else would. I can't think of her name off-hand. She did Catalina Channel butterfly; can you imagine?Donna No! I am having psychosomatic pain just contemplating it. I think it was a pyrrhic victory.
  • I once swam 1,000 yards butterfly without hanging on the wall, no fins, no frog kick, no one-arm drilling. OK - I did have a "bit" of glide. NKFrench: You are a psychological stud! What an attitude. But, unlike Vallahan, I'd probably rather go swim a mile of breaststroke with Rich.
  • I'd probably rather go swim a mile of breaststroke with Rich. You guys can swim your breaststroke. I'll sit on deck and:drink: .
  • Hey! :p low-blow Richie-Wan-Kenobi: I guess we both changed our avatars at the same time. I love yours. What color is that light saber though? Mine is purple and Lil Lil Fortress has green. Ki-Adi-Mu-Mom. (Lil Lil Fortress actually asked her pre-school teacher if she could be called Adi Gallia.... How embarassing...)

George- welcome back- don't we live in paradise these days? Peter I hear we live in Paradise but I am truly in Paradise until April or May down Mexico Way. My daughter told me of the wonderful weather back home - no thanks.

George, I sure am glad you are back; we really needed some of your comments on threads while you were gone. I used to swim or kick an hour of backstroke. I did it because I enjoyed doing it and I could work on technique and turns for a long time. Now, there may have been no true "benefit" from it, but it was also nice to know that I could swim a mile of backstroke, not slow, not fast, medium-slow. Hey, what about that Canadian woman who only swims open water doing butterfly? She'd need this training for sure, but it is unlikely anyone else would. I can't think of her name off-hand. She did Catalina Channel butterfly; can you imagine? Donna I am not saying it is wrong to do these swims but it is really useless swimming when there is no event over 200m for these three strokes. Over the years I only do kicking practice on my back. I have met her several times but in fact I have a picture of a group of swimmers who do the swims but for me I never did a marathon swim that was not a race or did not have prze money.
  • Except for warm-up or cool down I only swim breaststroke at race pace(except for some at "swim pretty" speed to work on technique.) I want to get the muscle memory only of race pace. I think you have to do what works for you to keep you interested and challenged.
  • To swim anything but max speed for workouts for these strokes is not worth the effort. Butterfrog??? WE ARE ALL SO GLAD YOU'RE BACK!  :smooch: There was a lot of talk about butterfrog while you were away. Terry posted a butterfrog video. I think there were some other posts on that subject too; can't remember where. MMA. I am not doing any distance workouts for any stroke. Some really smart guru told me that endurance was overrated and I should focus on quality workouts since I'm not hitting the pool enough as it is.
  • Leslie- long grinding workouts of strokes you don't do, at distances not competed in by the civilized world (Aussies don't count) are an expiation of karmic sins garnered during one's twenties. Hey, no fair putting up a picture of some hollywood starlet as your avatar! Peter: Didn't you read my new user name? That is my sometimes nasty 12 year old "Rude Hormonal Fortress" who, as you know, shares your inexplicable passion for la breaststroke. I have expiated my (past) karmic sins and I now focusing on non-meritricious, continent, non-specious, courtly postings. Just for today though.

I once swam 1,000 yards butterfly without hanging on the wall, no fins, no frog kick, no one-arm drilling. OK - I did have a "bit" of glide. I am not a strong flier and normally had problems dragging my arms on the recovery/stiff shoulders, and a weak kick. My muscles hurt a lot, but I had a great feeling of accomplishment. Someone watching said it looked like I could have gone forever, and I thought I HAD (20 minutes). And now I never have to do it again. :) The point of the whole swim was just so I could say to myself that I could do it. And I think it helps pyschologically. The shorter distances just aren't so scary after knowing I can do more.
