I can understand swimming crawl distance workouts but why swim distance backstroke, butterfly or breaststroke?
How many events are there that are over 200m for fly, breaststroke or backstroke.
To swim anything but max speed for workouts for these strokes is not worth the effort.
Butterfrog???

I once swam 1,000 yards butterfly without hanging on the wall, no fins, no frog kick, no one-arm drilling. OK - I did have a "bit" of glide. I am not a strong flier and normally had problems dragging my arms on the recovery/stiff shoulders, and a weak kick. My muscles hurt a lot, but I had a great feeling of accomplishment. Someone watching said it looked like I could have gone forever, and I thought I HAD (20 minutes). And now I never have to do it again. :) The point of the whole swim was just so I could say to myself that I could do it.
And I think it helps pyschologically. The shorter distances just aren't so scary after knowing I can do more.
