Does anyone here train or swim with a snorkel? I'm not sure if it would offer any advantages in training, except maybe taking some stress off the back and neck. But I guess this is the place to find out.
Yes, I do warm up,cool down, long free sets, and kicking with my center mount snorkle. It is great for body position and I find when using it I get less shoulder pain.
Haven't tried the center mount snorkle myself, but the local Y coach, who is very progressive, uses the snorkels with his kids. He says it helps promote good balance/symetry.
I've swum w/ a mask and side snorkle in open water, but found
the relatively small diameter of the snorkle I used restricted
heavy breathing.
there is a guy who swims with snorkel at my pool. HIs kick sucks & he has lots of trouble turning when he doesn't have the snorkel on. I think they are really bad to use because they distrot the stroke.
Wow! If one has blown out their shoulders this could be a huge advantage for workouts by decreasing stress on the rotator cuff(s). The trade off would be a possible loss of (bilateral) breathing, OK no breathing at all, and losing body rotation and reach. For
some of us that would be so worth it! More yardage, less ouch!

How would a snorkel aid those with shoulder injuries?
I think she meant that it would eliminate stress on the shoulder from stroke mechanics problems caused by misaligning your head while turning to breath.
I find body roll is easier to practice with a snorkle as you have to concentrate on fewer things. It helps head position for if you bend your neck you feel it immediately. It is better for your shoulders as you are less like to be thrown into misalignment when you breathe.

Doing 25's without a breath will provide you with the same sensation. Among a few others sometimes.
