Best way to let out aggression while swimming?

I need a way to let out some anger safely, and I figure doing it during my swim tomorrow is a good enoug way. Any suggestions? (Background: I just got a new car two weeks ago - my first one - and today it was dented by some ******* in a parking lot. Two golfball sized dents and streaks of white paint. And I have to pay for the repairs myself. I'm so depressed and angry at the same time.....)
  • As thisgirl suggested, sprints seem to be great for dealing w/ stuff like that. I come more from a running background, new to swimming, but when I'm feeling angry, running some sprints (carefully, tho, since I'm not going to injure myself and cause more frustrattion) seems to put me into present tense, gets me focused on the moment... hard to think of too much else when I'm in anaerobic range. Then feel a lot more relaxed afterward. And as Sheala suggested, I've found those imaginary "races" are a lot of fun, esp'y if the person who has irritated me is in a position of power. (Okay, bad guy, me, you, the running track ... high noon....) ;) Sorry to hear about your car. Hope it doesn't turn out to be too expensive! Not worth letting him steal your peace of mind though!

On my Thursday swim, I took the "Shark" approach. Exploded off the wall, swam hard and fast away from that shark...who turned into a octopus, who turned into an eel, who turned into a stingray, who turned into a school of guppies. Yeah, spent that energy quick! HA!

My mantra is "control what you can control, let go of the rest" therefore, you can't control the jerk who hit your car...but you can control your peace of mind & body. Working out is a great way to let go of some of that frustration! I would suggest working on stronger strokes...really slipping those fingers into the water and pulling through your stroke. Maybe visualize the jerk in the lane next to you and "race"? Either way, I am sorry to hear about your car. Dood, that sux. Here's to a great workout!

My ways of letting anger out are swimming with a closed fist and punching the water --sometimes I imagine certain individuals, but not often... Big kicks and exploding off the wall on turns. Butterfly is also great to get out anger and frustration! Blast from the imagination past: I used to pretend I set off a bomb and swim really fast to the other side to get away. Hey, swimming can get pretty boring after the 10,000 flip turn! P.S. I can't tell you how many times I have beaten the entire East German swim team or won against hungry sharks --in my mind!

Maybe some yoga, so you don't drown yourself. Just kidding. Kind of. Actually, swimming is a great way to work off some aggression. The best way I've found in the water? Shorter distances, faster intervals. Some butterfly, too, if you're bright-red-shaky-angry. Longer distances give you time to think about being angry and then you're just swimming around being angry. A nice, hard workout always does wonders for the temper. It's hard to be angry when you're so tired you can't see straight. ;)

Water polo. It makes the start of open water races seem so much more genteel. Matt

We might get the attention of the bash the triathletes thread and then there will be some serious ranting and raging going on in here... A bit of a PS, One of the kids I work with noted how "stupid" people looked when they were angery... We all could be laughing inside!

When I'm very upset, I think of myself as a roman war ship. I swim as long and lean as I can. then I think of ramming into a lesser ship & destroying it. Make the idiot a Carthage war ship & ram it hard. This has worked for me eversince my high school Algebra teacher gave me my first B in math.
