I am working out in a pool that does not have blocks, so obviously I time myslef from a push start. My question is:what should I expect my times to be if I start from blocks vs. push off the wall, what is the time difference between the two?

Depending on your quality of start and push off--- between 2 and 3 sec.

American Swim Coaches Assosiation generally recognises the difference between a block start and a on deck start as one second. Between two and two seconds difference from a block start to a water push off. Your results may vary:D Someone with a good streamlines pushoff can keep up with a poor block start:D There are also people with great block starts who can gain over 3 seconds over someone pushing off. When I was less heavy:mad: and working out and squatting 1000 pounds, I was in that catagory. I could beat the best freestyle starters with my breaststroke start. Sure wish I could do that again:(

So in that case I was wondering:my time for 50 meters short-course is 29 sec from a push-off(unshaved, untapered), what could I expect to see at a competition with a block start(provided I practice it of course), tapered, shaved and feeling good ?:-) I never competed so I am really curious if I am ready to look "presentable" at a competition(I have been swimming since AUG,2004) and what I can hope for ...

Let your first meet help you with how fast you swim. Things change when you swim in a meet vs practice. Just have fun with your first meet and you will see a faster 50. The second 50 is where you start comparing times.
  • Depends if you're going from a coaches "GO" or from a roll, but either way it's about a second difference for me. by the way the difference between a roll off the block ie "start the clock when my feet leave" versus starting off a gun or beep is about .8 of a second Ande Originally posted by hooked-on-swimming I am working out in a pool that does not have blocks, so obviously I time myslef from a push start. • You may want to count your strokes off the wall -v- your deck start, especially with ***. My *** block start shaves about 2 strokes off of my 1st 25-yd stroke count. So not only do you have the extra time 'push' from the block/deck but you have extra endurance from not taking those strokes, which you then use to push yourself a little extra throughout.
