The meaning of swimming

(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.) I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense. What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?

We all swim for different reasons, but nothing can beat the feeling gliding thru the water. When every stroke feel like you are floating thru the water, just perfect. Swimming keeps me sane, can't sstand to be out of the pool for more than afew days

Gliding through the water defnitely feels nice. But I have to say that I also like the form that swimming gives to my shoulders...

Swimming keeps me sane, can't stand to be out of the pool for more than afew days originally posted by Sanwin Kinda reminds me of a poem I once read: Ode to Water As the water flows across me I feel it’s gentle embrace Weightlessly I glide through Thee I am soaring through outer space There are no restraints to hold me down I am as free as a bird in flight A million miles above the ground Oh what a joyous plight My mind is set free of every stress As I cut through Thee like a knife Oh to feel your smooth caress One of the greatest joys in life by Newmastersswimmer p.s. sorry about the repost poem...but it just seem to fit the mood of your last posting....and it is so far back now (around page 4 or 5 of this thread) that no one would ever read it again if I didn't repost it....it is my only poem here I that I wrote and actually liked....I hope you will enjoy it too?

Luckily I am totally immune to shame (as SO many of my postings around here and on the NSR site have shown!)....and so plugging myself is always a good option for me when the situation arises...LOL!! Newmastersswimmer
